The 80th anniversary of VE Day is around the corner - so it is a good time to pay respect to the sacrifice of thousands of men and women in the Second World War. I took a look at roll of honour data for Dundee and Aberdeen. To emphasise the scale of loss I built a memorial garden using D3.js

"You must comprehend a great deal in your idea of an accomplished woman,β Jane Austen wrote in 1813 and I feel that sentiment persists. That is why I chose to use embroidery - deemed simply "fancy work" during Jane Austen's time despite often taking a lot more skill than this simple #dataviz
I decided to join this month's Journal Dataviz Challenge and visualise the Women in The Nobel Prize with a slightly different format. Each pair of petals represents a single woman who won the prize from 1901 to 2024. The more women winning a year, the flower grows fuller. #dataviz

It's easy to look at our maps from earlier in this series and think that the crashes are fairly evenly distributed - that's why we created a heatmap that highlights the density of crashes around a 1km radius.

The article also takes a closer look at how many crashes happen in rural versus urban sections of the road. Once again QGIS was use to find all the crashes overlapping with or immediately adjacent to settlements defined by Scottish Government Spatial Data on Localities. 3/4
Shows one of the heatmap blackspots for three tightly clustered crashes near Colpy on the A96.
The heatmap is based on the density of crashes within a one-kilometre radius. Larger numbers or more closely clustered crashes within that radius appear with a darker shade, like this one found near Morgan McVeighs restaurant in Insch with three crashes. 2/4 #ddj #datajournalism

We have analysed when crashes happen on the A96, but today we want to provide a better answer for the question of where they happen. Using QGIS I created a heatmap along the road from Aberdeen to Inverness showing clustered accident blackspots. 1/4 #dataviz
As part of our analysis, weβve looked at:
β’ Accident severity of crashes on the A96
β’ The demographics of drivers involved in crashes
β’ The 282 casualties between 2019 and 2023
β’ When, where and times of day where the most accidents happen

To tackle a data lag, our crash tracker will combine official data and information on crashes covered by the @pressandjournal.co.uk live team - bringing a comprehensive picture where and when accidents are happening. 2/3 www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/tran...
Fourteen fatal crashes, 89 serious crashes and 76 slight collisions. That is the breakdown of the 179 accidents on the A96 between 2019 and 2023 as we launch our latest investigation. Throughout the week we will have exclusive analysis on the road running between Aberdeen & Inverness. #dataviz 1/3
But what about Hogmanay itself? A station in Orkney comes first with 49mm in a single day. The map below shows all the stations that had more than 30mm of rain on Hogmanay. I used R to access and compare the data for all stations on the SEPA API.
After an amber weather alert for rain on New Year's Eve, I am kicking off the year with some rainfall analysis. Some monitoring stations across Moray and the Highlands saw their wettest December on record - with one even breaking a record set in 1999. www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/6661...

Map shows the high street units on George Street and St John's Place. While George Street has more vacant units (indicated with red), it has more than four times the number of units. George Street only has three vacant units and St John's Place has none (occupied shown in blue).
These to radial charts compare the composition of George Street (left) and St John's Place (right). It demonstrates that St John's Place consists of solely Food and Drink and a tenth of it is hair and beauty. Meanwhile, the top four categories of shopping, services, hair and beauty, and, food and drink don't even show the full composition of George Street. However shopping is its biggest category.
As we look at the changes over the course of the year, we decided to focus on the two most occupied streets - George Street and St John's Place. The latter has remained fully occupied the entire year. #dataviz
Shows two bar charts side by side for December 2023 and November 2024. The bar widths show the total number of units. High Street has the most units but it has fallen from third most vacant to sixth. However there are more streets with vacancy rates of 20% or more than there were in 2023.
This slope chart shows how vacancy rates on Perth's high streets fluctuated from census to census over 2024. However this chart highlights the average across all high streets. It started at 16.39% in December of last year and it was 17.71% in November of 2024.
We have been tracking Perth's high streets for a year now. But how has the Fair City changed over the course of 12 months? The average vacancy rate in Perth increased slightly since 2023, but fell or remained at 0% for five out of nine tracked streets. #dataviz #ddj #datajournalism
