Community has been clear: Phoenix must be bold. Residents are calling for accountability, resources for families impacted by ICE, and policies that reflect the realities faced by immigrant and refugee communities.
Community has been clear: Phoenix must be bold. Residents are calling for accountability, resources for families impacted by ICE, and policies that reflect the realities faced by immigrant and refugee communities.
But because community members showed up to City Hall and demanded to be heard, the city is now moving forward with listening sessions for the CTI.
π
Community meetings to be held March 11β20
π First meeting: Tomorrow, 3/11 at Memorial Hall at Steele Indian School Park at 6β7:30 PM
This includes documenting federal immigration enforcement activity, tracking impacts on city services, improving multilingual communication, training city employees on enforcement protocols, and building partnerships and volunteer opportunities.
Council ultimately directed staff to move forward with the Community Transparency Initiative before any public comment was heard.
Iβm also grateful to Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington, Councilwoman Deb Stark and Councilwoman Laura Pastor for staying and listening to community concerns.
I want to thank the community members who insisted their voices be part of this process. Civic engagement is the foundation of a healthy democracy.
Despite that, community members and organizations still showed up to City Hall and demanded to be heard. Their presence transformed what began as a staff presentation into a real conversation about the fear many families are facing as ICE enforcement escalates.
The Mayor and City Council were scheduled to discuss the Community Transparency Initiative (CTI), a proposal related to federal immigration enforcement in Phoenix on Feb. 9. The format of the meeting got switched to a work study meaning public wouldn't get to comment.
#Phoenix is deciding how it will respond to rising #ICE enforcement. On Feb 10, community demanded to be heard. Because of them, Phx is holding public meetings to shape the cityβs response. π§΅

Publicly reported sightings - which represent a fraction of ICE activity - show agents hitting some areas more than others.

It is through this lens of prioritizing community who has been in contact and community with my office since my inauguration (April 2025) that I will be showing up to this work study session. You can observe here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHiS...
At a moment like this, silencing the voices of the community most impacted by the violent immigration enforcement actions we have been seeing is unacceptable. Protecting the city as an institution cannot be the priority. We must demand intentional, enforceable protections for our residents.
#Phoenix Must Protect and Defend #Immigrant Communities πΉ Starting shortly is a Phoenix #CityCouncil Work Study Session to discuss how the city plans to respond to the growing presence of #ICE and federal intimidation. Because it is a study session, it means it will NOT be open for public comment.
DHS, ICE and CBP lie 100% of the time:

Because #BlackHistory is not something we remember only in February. It is something we make together, right now. πΉ
My team and I are committed to work that honors that legacy. We invite you to walk with us. Organize with us. Hold us accountable. Dream with us and build with us.
...Assata Shakur, Angela Davis, Audre Lorde, bell hooks and Alicia Garza, to name a few. And I honor those organizing among us now. They showed us the path.
Our responsibility is to walk it with courage and clarity.
I honor the Black liberation fighters and visionaries who came before us: Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Ida B Wells, James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Bobby Seale, Huey P. Newton, Fred Hampton, Eldridge Cleaver, Octavia Butler...
The roots of #ICE are in #antiBlackness. That means our fight against ICE and state violence must be rooted in #BlackLiberation. Anything less misses the truth of history and the urgency of this moment.
ICE is targeting Black and brown #immigrants and advancing the current administrationβs fascist agenda. And letβs be clear: ICE is not new. It is a modern manifestation of slave patrols. Those systems did not disappear. They evolved.
I am also reflecting on where our city and our country are positioned right now. Across the U.S., including here in Phoenix, #ICE is invading communities and tearing families apart.
As we begin this #BlackHistoryMonth, I want to recognize the historic and emerging Black communities of District 7: #SouthPhoenix, #Maryvale, #Laveen. It is a privilege to fight, live, breathe, build, and dream alongside you as neighbors.
Join me for a community conversation at Thread Cafecito and Thrift in #DTPHX! Come and connect directly with me as your councilwoman.

#Phoenix voters were clear: We want #LightRail expansion. Walking away now to "re-evaluate" betrays that vote, deepens inequity, & risks millions in federal funding.
Light rail is about access, climate, & economy, especially for #WestPhoenix. Choose Option A www.valleymetro.org/project/capi... ππΉ
ποΈ The survey closes Tuesday, January 27 β the same day Phoenix City Council votes.
The West Side deserves light rail.
Letβs keep fighting for it. πΉ
Calls to βreevaluateβ are not neutral. They are delays β and delays have always pushed the West Side to the back of the line. π£ Fill out the survey before Jan. 27 www.valleymetro.org/project/capi...
If #Phoenix City Council fails to support the Capital Extension (CAPEX) on Jan. 27, #WestPhoenix loses light rail, Maryvale loses its only guaranteed future line, and Phoenix walks away from millions in federal dollars meant for our neighborhoods.
If youβre a #MedicalCare worker or #HarmReduction volunteer providing care in #Phoenix parks and want to be included in healthcare stakeholder meetings to help reshape ordinance language, send me a message with your name, email, and whether youβre a professional or volunteer.
