Omg!!
Omg!!
Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.
White. Hot. Rage.
Re-reading this article by Anton Hur on Han Kang's Nobel prize. During my year in Korea, I heard so many times about the angst surrounding Korea not winning a Nobel prize....until last year it finally happened. Beautiful piece, such a privilege to know Anton
Lovely article, so enjoyed reading this. Go Anton!

I had two NSF grants terminated last week, for a total of just under $1M. The largest one had just started and its goal was to provide users with more context and information on the content that they see on social media.
Not yet though, there is a 125% tariff for goods from China.
Omg!!
Happy birthday!
"The last few months have been a moral catastrophe. At least thereβs no economic upside."
I talked to NIH officials, current and former, about what's been happening inside the agency since the Trump administration shut down their grantmaking pipeline in January. Their stories showed just how willing our new leaders are to break the law: www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...
IMC 2025 replicability track call is out. New this year: The papers accepted under this track will be part of the proceedings. You can also choose to replicate papers not only from previous IMCs, but also IMC-adjacent conferences. Take a look at the call and do apply!
(1) This is awful, and shows the cruel end-game of this conservative takeover.

update: sbu is also pausing NIH submissions
What!! Hmm, I am writing one and havent heard anything from SBU yet. It does make sense for schools to take this stand, but it is so hard for PIs especially given the R21 and R01 deadlines are rolling in now. What a nightmare we live in.
Really a wonderful set of slides, especially liked your example about your dissertation, which is very cool to begin with--but showing how you can pitching it in a way that is impressive but not memorable versus pitching it so no one will forget what you are doing. Very nice.
when I first saw this post, my first thought was, oh please not Neil Gaiman and then I read some stuff (not the entire article, I could not even stomach the parts I read). what depraved souls some people are.
If CSK moves to bluesky I will be all set.
Other interesting parts are 21-26 where he discusses how he applied to TIFR for his Ph.D. from his village in Saliamangalam, and in Part 2 9.30 - 15 about solving the Warings problems with a little help from my mom. I added time labels in the comment sections for both videos, so check them out.
My favorite section is 41.5 to 52 where he discusses how he wrote his first paper with his advisor Prof Ramachandra (and from 50-52 there is an interesting discussion about Ponniyin Selvan and Bourbaki).

A very interesting archival project called βIndian mathematicians at workβ does these long-form interviews with mathematicians not only about their mathematics but also about their lives. Here are two-part videos of an interview of my dad Prof Balasubramanian, an analytical number theorist.
I found this to be a really interesting and illuminating thread
I keep thinking about how many institutional failures symptomatic of our society led to this doctor being able to cause such harm. This @propublica.org piece is long, wild, sad, terrifying, and definitely worth reading!

I dont know you but I loved following you on twitter, I am glad to see you here.
I add it just before switching the stove off after everything is done. It is a game changer.
