Poorly drawn sketch of a large computing machine connected to electrical wires and three stick figures kneeling in front of it. Text above the stick figures says: "O Deep Thought what is the ultimate answer to the problem of the climate crisis?"
Same sketch, now with text above the machine saying: "You should have stopped burning fossil fuels"
Same sketch, zoomed out to see three smoke stacks and text above the stick figures saying: "How could we have known?"
I'm no artist, but hopefully this gets the point across. A comic in three panels.
Opt-out is not nearly enough, of course. This should be opt-in only --- and for pay.
"Instead of engaging in journalism (fact checking, what?) he just lets himself get buffeted by the imaginations of some of the most unhinged people in this space, and platforms their nonsense"

Hey @officialgrammarly.bsky.social we're gonna need to know the full list of identities you have stolen here as well as clear info on how to opt-out

Wait, what?! Grammarly made an AI persona of me and all these other journalists?!!!!!
Thank you @caseynewton.bsky.social for shaming them into at least offering a paltry optoutβ although obviously that is not enough.

I don't need to take a quiz to determine that. I prefer writing by actual people/do my very best not to consume synthetic media.
Wow -- this is infuriating.
no I guess we won't acknowledge that this is all stolen from human writers
Tune into the Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 livestream today at 12 PT to catch @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social with special guests @mwoluchem.bsky.social and @livgar.bsky.social discussing data centers.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification.
If that's an indirect criticism of my drawing ability, no need --- I already said I'm no artist.
Just now, when someone on fedi also shared it with me.

And on how it's boring: soooo many people are cosplaying college sophmore dorm debates ever since ChatGPT was launched.

This dystopian future is here now.

I so appreciate this because "AI" enthusiast coders have a profound misunderstanding of what it means to be part of a community of practice. I think that's a really helpful starting point when I decide whether to engage, resist, or dunk (all of which can be appropriate depending on the situation)
Gone are the days when βcloudβ as a metaphor could hide the material impacts of data centers, so now they are sold with AI hype.
This is making the rounds again, and I was amused to reread the thread and see that it was shortly before our book came out. Lots has happened in the past 10 months, but the message of this thread still holds.

What coders lose by relying on AI. From our event with the University of Washington Office of Public Lectures.
