The extreme amount of unethical scraping that's occurring all over the web right now won't be solved by limiting features for good-faith visitors; for that reason, I've reinstated my full-text RSS feed. stephvee.ca/blog/updates...

One day, society at large is going to look at chatbots the same way we look at smoking cigarettes today.

BTW, I noticed that on Mastodon you aren't blocking your link previews. That may be part of the problem! Read this: chris.partridge.tech/2022/request...
I had to block all Mastodon user agents from showing link previews, because I was basically getting DDoSed whenever I shared a blog post.
Yup, I can only access your homepage at the moment -- no articles. I'm sorry you're going through this. It's infuriating! If I wasn't using CF, I have no doubt whatsoever my site would be down too. If I was the conspiracy theory type, I'd almost wonder if CF themselves were behind the bots...
I've had to tighten up my own protections so much lately and block so many IPs of bots masquerading as humans... the bot traffic is unreal.
New blog post (CW: references to graphic sexual material and traumatic working conditions) #fuckai

SO good. Iβd take ten seasons like this over a single season of House of the Dragon.
CW: discussions of trauma, extreme consumption of pornography, unsafe & degrading working conditions

I mostly post on Mastodon, but wanted to share this here as well:

There are many reasons why I don't use LLMs. This is a big one. Excellent interview b/w 404 Media and one of the many vulnerable Kenyan data labellers desperate for work who are exploited by Gen AI companies.
A follow up to yesterday's post. As much as it pains me to make this change, my RSS feed is no longer full-text. Thanks, GenAI: you're the reason why we can't have nice things.

A quick blog post on RSS feeds, scraping, and the ongoing LLM bot onslaught. This is loosely written in response to Matthias Ott's recent article, "Webspace Invaders." #indieweb #blogging

I vividly remember burning an old broomstick with my friend in the open field behind his house around the age of eight or so. His mom ONLY got mad at us when she found out because she'd been looking everywhere for her lighter.
Ah, the 90s!
Great post! This crap is happening on my website, too. More than half of the traffic I receive is from botsβ¦ I worry about my RSS feed as well. Iβd like to believe that everyone subscribed to my feed is a human with good intentions, but Iβm not that naive.
I have the exact same issue on my website. Every day, I receive literal THOUSANDS of hits for βwp-adminβ pages and PHP extensions that donβt actually exist on my website. I had to set up a WAF specifically for WordPress/PHP exploit attempts.
Hobbies can be *so* beneficial to your well-being, so I say screw side hustle culture! Do fun stuff for yourself!

I can't stand what social media has done to the hobby scene. I know so many people who feel like they can't "waste time" on hobbies, esp. if they can't use them to make a few extra bucks.
And so... I've been chipping away at this page on my days off, and it's finally done!

I love scrolling through /uses pages on the #indieweb, but I always want to know more about WHY people use what they use... so I made sure to add that information to my own /uses page! stephvee.ca/uses
Thank you, I hope you enjoy the posts!
My latest rewind is up, where I summarize the blog posts I wrote this month, recommend some entertainment titles worth checking out (such as The Pitt and The Studio), and share a few interesting links.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it.
I always remind people who torture themselves over end of life decisions that there's a big difference between "being alive" and "living." It's the same with our pets. You did the best thing for her; instead of subjecting her to daily stress and pain, you gave her the gift of passing peacefully.
It's so funny, hope you enjoy it! Another perfect scene that encapsulates every single condescending "huddle" I've ever attended that wastes time I don't have and takes me away from providing care: www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-yb...
The way Jo glances at the camera at the 1:30 mark...
I also enjoyed Getting On. It's not quite as accurate as The Pitt, but the dark humour is spot-on. (Helps that Jo Brand used to work as a mental health nurse.) This scene fucking killed me: youtu.be/9HL7sCu8Yys
"Put it in her notes."
Someone's gotta do it!
I couldn't deal with Grey's; it was somewhat sound medically, but often got team roles completely wrong. The Pitt gets EVERYTHING right, to the point where I actually had a few panic attacks during the first season (Robby's 1st COVID flashback and Dana getting assaulted...)
I love The Pitt so much. It is the only medical show Iβve ever watched that accurately represents the insanity of working in health care. It even gets our little in-jokes and dark humour right.
