Those are great points. It also overlooks an opportunity to let a heading do some work for your writing, signaling an important point you hope readers take away from a piece.

Six bald eagles on a tree overlooking a river

I just saw TEN bald eagles hanging out over the Mohawk river watching for fish. It's the most spectacular thing I've ever seen in nature and it was just from this viewing point for a waterfall (like right off the road, basically). This gives me a little hope. Now off to a protest!

This isn’t immigration policy. It’s a business model.

ICE keeps growing, not because it makes America safer, but because corporations are raking in billions off cages, bodies, and suffering. ICE’s existence is a massive revenue stream.

If you are feeling stressed by your winter break writing project, take a beat and ask yourself whether you can write something else instead. Do you have to write this piece now? Is there something else that would be easier? Give yourself permission to shift course!

#Freelancers! What project management software do you like? Mine is going away in early 2026. Boo! I'd ideally like some that does invoicing, time tracking, contracting, and accounting as well as allows me to keep track of clients (including taking meeting notes). Thanks for any help!

This is so true! I remember being in a faculty meeting next to someone who was on his ipad (looking at photos, writing emails, reading the news). I had such a difficult time concentrating! Thanks for this research!

BANNED BOOKS WEEK Oct. 5-11, 2025. Censorship is so 1984 - Read for Your Rights. ala.org/bbooks. American Library Association

Censorship is so 1984. Read for your rights.

Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, and this year's theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.

Try not to be snarky in reader reports. Yes, manuscripts can be frustrating. But remember that learning to write a book is not easy. As an academic editor, I read many of these and snark makes them difficult for authors (and editors) to digest. Just play nice.

I hope your acquisitions editor is on board with your accessible language. Writing in a way that can be understood extends the reach of academic work. I just finished reading Leonard Cassuto's Academic Writing as if Readers Matter, who I think would see that comment as a big complement!

I'm experimenting with writing between chapters. I recently started a book and used Word headings to list out the various chapters. I then mostly drafted the intro, but now and moving a bit between chapters. I should say this is a different kind of book than my monograph, but we'll see how it goes!
