Anti-nature rhetoric damaging voter confidence in Labour, new poll finds | The Wildlife Trusts
19% less likely to vote Labour because Starmer threatens to remove nature rules
New poll finds Labourβs anti-nature rhetoric is costing voter trust.
After Keir Starmer called environmental protections misguided, 19% of 2024 Labour voters are less likely to vote Labour again.
Attacking wildlife protections is not a winning strategy.

βA sobering previewβ: extreme heat now affects one in three people globally, study finds
Rising temperatures making it hard even for young, healthy people to safely do normal physical tasks in many regions
#Climate breakdown shrinks the amount of time people can safely go about their lives. Rising temperatures, driven by #fossilfuel burning make it hard even for many young, healthy adults to do basic physical activities, such as housework or walking up stairs

Weakened food security could tip into unrest after a cyber-attack, extreme weather or conflict, analysis finds
Perfect storm of climate and nature collapse, cyber security risks and geopolitical unrest means we are vulnerable to food shortages and that would be very bad indeed.

The Hunger Gap
A gulf in public understanding prevents us from seeing how and why our food supply is at risk.
In 2023, I sought to explain to a parliamentary committee what a structural collapse of the global food system would look like, and why this this is plausible - even likely. I think the likelihood has just ratcheted up a notch. I beg you to read and understand. Thanks

A Nature Communications study confirms it: 2014β17 bleaching hit 51% of the worldβs reefs.
Worse than any event before it.
Ocean warming is accelerating. Irreversible reef collapse is now βnear certainβ on our current path.
This is extinction in real time.

New study in the National Academy of Sciences warns climate breakdown could shrink global grazing land by 36β50% by 2100!
That threatens 100M+ pastoralists and 1.4B livestock β mostly in low-income, fragile nations.
This is how climate breakdown fuels endless hunger, displacement and conflict.

So UK needs as much roof area collecting sunlight as possible to help meet growing demands.
Bottom line: Pile on renewable generation and storage, achieve demand stability, use energy with utmost efficiency and sparingly and only then can we cease to rely on burning fossil fuels.

Importantly electricity is only about 20β25% of total UK energy use (transport, heating, etc. dominate). So renewables are far less than 50% of total average annual energy consumption.
BUT...
UK electricity demand: ~300 TWh/year
Potential rooftop solar generation: ~200β300 TWh/year

Most Biomass, e.g. from DRAX is controversial. However introducing large scale renewable energy storage would displace some electricity generation from burning fossil gas and biomass. The amount displaced depends on how much storage exists and how long it can store energy.

Energy bible confirms renewables now provide over half of the UKβs electricity generation
www.renewableuk.com/news-and-res...
Itβs an annual average.
Wind: 83.3 TWh = 29.2%
Solar: 14.4 TWh = ~5%
Hydro: ~2%
Biomass / bioenergy: about 40 TWh β 13β14% of UK electricity.
Total renewables: 143.7 TWh = 50.4% of UK electricity
