It was good to co-author alongside @clarekelly.bsky.social & Caitríona Leahy & with the input from Harun Šiljak & Norah Campbell. We are clearly not the only ones thinking like this, both within Trinity & beyond, so let's build community to #resistAI

My review of Chris Gratien's The Unsettled Plain: An Environmental History of the Late Ottoman Frontier (Stanford 2022)
‘Foreign experts brought to the Ministry of Economy, at a meeting’. The photo appears to depict the visit of American Assistant Secretary of Commerce Julius Klein to Ankara in November 1930 (personal collection of the author).
This article took me to unexpected places! Ostensibly about a Swiss sociologist in Turkey in the 1930s, it touches on global right-wing ideologies, the nature of Kemalism, and the politics of experts in the early republic. Open access in @conteurohistory.bsky.social 32:2.

AOC: I saw on Fox, Jeanine Pirro says that they found so many babies and two year olds and four year olds receiving social security. I got a notice for you Jeanine Pirro: those babies receive social security because their parents died. That’s not a waste. That’s humanity. That’s America.
We live in dark times. Listen to this podcast that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Mind you, this will be a coalition of the corrupt. Not that capitalism before Trump was apolitical. It just resurfaced its ugly face more strongly and openly than ever before.
Trump seems to have similarly discovered how to use the power of decision making to cultivate broader loyalties to his rule. The ways in which tariff exemptions are secured by companies and countries alike today will only help broaden the Trump coalition in the months to come.
Insider trading in the US? This is where regimes similar to that of Trump had thrived elsewhere around the world. Turkey is one example. Politically motivated shifts in monetary policy of the past few years has led to a massive transfer of wealth to Erdogan's cronies at the expense of everyone else.
