An ending needs to be a satisfying conclusion of the events that proceed it. Or otherwise have a compelling reason to be unsatisfactory in some way.
"And then a bunch of rocks fell on them and they died" is not a good ending just because you can intellectualize about "It do be that way sometimes"
In a similar vein, I'm putting "an ending can be Good even if it isn't happy" on a goddamn shelf until you people learn how to use it correctly.
