I’ve got a new essay out in the Jan/Feb Asimov’s on empathy and Fahrenheit 451. I wrote this one at the beginning of last year and it’s only become more relevant in the last 12 months:

The solution is the same: a societal shift towards the sense of a shared responsibility for our communities. Not that one single man should bootstrap up an entire community.

It reminds me of the criticism once levied at millenials (and now at Gen Z) about how we’re ungrateful for what we have, and we don’t have the futures we were once promised because we didn’t work hard enough and spend our money on avocado toast at brunch or we took too many mental health days.

I’m all for being community-minded and being grateful for what you have, but the idea that not a single person could ever help this poor man take a couple weeks off to see the Parthenon so he could live without profound regrets? Come on

I didn’t see It’s a Wonderful Life before until a few years ago and it just made me mad.

Your entire community only produced one kind and competent person (you), therefore you’ll never be able to go to college or take a vacation or do anything for your own happiness? Be grateful!
