When this sculpture was exhibited in 1877, it caused a scandal. The male nude was perceived to be so realistic that Rodin was accused of having made casts of an actual person. His manner of portraying the human anatomy as it really looks was groundbreaking and contradicted the prevailing demands on idealised beauty. The sculpture was later named The Age of Bronze, or The Awakening Man, referring to prehistoric mankind.But the depicted man could not be associated with any specific myth or legend, which Rodinβs contemporaries found strange. Perhaps this timelessness is what makes his works so appreciated by us today.

Damned Woman was created for The Gates of Hell but never inserted in the composition. It was easy to adapt to other groups, however, and can be recognised in several works created in 1890-1900.
