Even if the destruction somehow stopped today, it will take years to rebuild.
This is a fucking travesty.
“In just three days of fighting in the Middle East, more than 800 Patriot missiles were used — more than Ukraine has received throughout the entire Russian full-scale invasion.”
(A year’s worth of production or more, btw)

Special thanks to my PhD examiners, @liamebrowne.bsky.social & Auke Ijspeert, for encouraging this publication; to the reviewers for thoughtful feedback; to @sainsburywellcome.bsky.social for the space and resources to follow my curiosity; and to Tiago Branco 3+ years of unwavering support. 11/11
4. Lastly, the new experimental paradigm itself is a valuable contribution to the field as it paves the way for biomechanically informed investigation of gait in my favourite experimentally tractable species 🐭. 10/11
3. The results are also interesting to consider in the context of feedforward- vs. feedback-driven locomotion, as the tighter phase coupling during non-restrained locomotion may be another reason for the reduced load-related effect seen on the motorised treadmill, without head fixation. 9/11
2. Since the direction of phase shift (reduced f-limb phase lag at greater h-limb loading) contradicts previous results in load-bearing dogs, we propose that what matters for homolateral coordination is not the load distribution in absolute terms, but relative to the specific animal's baseline. 8/11
What makes this work interesting?
1. Animals with highly uneven load distributions (giraffes, ring-tailed lemurs) do not display trotting gaits. By extending the natural biomechanical range of mouse locomotion, our study supports a role for load distribution in gait expression. 7/11
A shift towards greater homolateral synchronisation can also be seen during non-restrained locomotion on a motorised treadmill, but the effect is much smaller.
We discuss several potential reasons, e.g. head movement likely counters how much load gets redistributed by our manipulations. 6/11
The shift in homolateral limb phase does not correspond to a switch between specific canonical gaits.
It is robust across different hindlimb phase relationships (in-phase, out-of-phase, anti-phase), limb support patterns, and speeds, although these factors modulate its magnitude. 5/11
We found that mice alternate their homolateral limbs when more of their weight is on their forelimbs, but shift toward up to a quarter-of-phase synchronisation as hindlimb load increases. 4/11
A drawing of the experimental paradigm: a head-fixed mouse is sitting on a passive treadmill that is being filmed from the right and left sides. Head bar height and treadmill tilt can be adjusted. The mouse has an optic fibre implanted in its brain (cuneiform nucleus).
We developed a new experimental paradigm in mice to decouple (1) speed from load-related variables and (2) load distribution from the absolute load.
Key components:
* head fixation
* head height + surface slope modulation
* optogenetic excitation of the cuneiform nucleus
3/11
How animals coordinate their limbs is known to depend on locomotor speed: walking gaits 🐾 are preferred at low speeds, while trot and gallop 🏃♀️ dominate at higher speeds. However, this association is not deterministic.
We sought to explore how interlimb coordination is influenced by leg load. 2/11
Delighted to share that part of my PhD work is now published in @cp-iscience.bsky.social: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
TL;DR Forelimb-hindlimb coordination is up to a quarter-phase more synced when hindlimbs are relatively more loaded, regardless of speed & phases of other limbs.

🇱🇻 Rihards Lozbers is just so unique. He’s just 16 years old, so not even the top of the Youth age category. He just finished 32 in the Sprint at the Olympic Games. Youth Worlds just isn’t a challenge for him and that’s not an insult to the other young men. He’s so good

Five years after the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines started, it seems the mystery of why the Astra-Zeneca and J&J vaccines led to a rare but deadly side effect of unusual blood clots and bleeding has finally been solved.
It's a fascinating case of molecular mimicry that may help make vaccine safer.🧪
This is a criminal attempt at destruction and silencing of knowledge. And it’s very intentional, in light of the leading role Georgian academics and students have played in protests against authoritarian rule

Do you think they’d ban someone honouring people died in a natural disaster or an accident or because of an illness? I doubt it. Meanwhile, Russia can kill you and be sure institutions like that will look away coz Russia made your death “political” and “we don’t talk politics here. It’s a bad taste”
⚡️ BREAKING: International Olympic Committee has banned Vladyslav Heraskevych from using a custom helmet featuring images of Ukrainian athletes killed by Russia at the 2026 Olympics.

Trump: "Some very good things happening on Ukraine and Russia. Very good things."
Very good things? Like the humanitarian disaster they caused in Kyiv? Today’s attack on the passenger train in Kharkiv region, or the bombing of a residential building in Odesa? WHAT GOOD THINGS?
Jeb, kā vakardienas Krustpunktā šī temata sakarā norādīja Latvijas otrā augstākā amatpersona, "redziet, Jūs runājat tikai par sliktām lietām".
