A half-whisky barrel planter that has been sown direct with Cosmos Sensation Mixed seeds and has just started to bloom. The background shows a hedge and a Cotoneaster shrub. To the foreground is a long, unkempt lawn. This is the method I use every year now with my Cosmos. So much easier than sowing in trays and pricking out etc. I do still take the tops out of the young plants when they have about 4 sets of leaves for bushier plants. Seeds available from our website (link in bio).

Old wives lore says you should sit on the soil with your bare bum to see if it's warm enough to sow your seeds.

Seriously though, it'll soon be time to sow annuals like Cosmos - I sow them direct into a big planter with good results and much less faff 😊🐝

I've had the loveliest afternoon in my little polytunnel putting in seeds, with lots of birdsong and warmth 💛
I found two of these little egg sacs suspended under my staging which apparently belong to a Pirate Spider, (Ero furcata cambridgei).
Hoping to spot them when they hatch out 🙂🕷️

A group of Virginia Stock flowers. These are very simple little flowers with four petals. They're in various shades from nearly white to deep purple and all the pinks in between. Each flower has a green centre and some of the petals are heavily veined. They look really good on the edges of borders where they can overflow onto paths or sprinkle the seeds between paving slabs. Seeds available from our online store, and are also available in a larger size.

Virginia Stock - totally faff-free flowers!
sprinkle the seeds onto a bit of bare soil and give it a quick "rummage", water gently, wait for the flowers to appear, followed soon after by Bees, Hoverflies and Butterflies 🐝🦋
Good sown into concrete/paving cracks too 😉
