if you don't wanna talk about a thing, don't don't type it into the talking about things website
I could just take a cheap shot and point out you are attacking and insulting me after saying that's not progressive, but more to the point: no, i do not think it is dumb at all. Sometime there are bad guys and they need to be attacked in some fashion by progressives
then i'm glad you weren't in charge in world war 2
Attacking people is often progressive (like, say, Mussolini) & insulting them is often fine (like, say, the president) the problem is being tetchy abt a popular celebrity expressing the reality that a lot of older (and wonderful) forms are on cultural life support rather than, like, important shit
its just a more PBS-vibes one
1)People do care about opera and ballet (findabe w/research) 2) a steelman version of his claim is they are no longer popular and economically self-sustaining forms (findable w/reearch). Neither require worrying about up or down.
If you want to avoid all that rigor but still write usefully, a subjective approach like Maggie Nelson's "Art of Cruelty" is a good one ("X makes me think about y or feel z")
"Art form a leads to b" can be tested. "Art form x expresses the author's belief in z" can be researched. Basic stuff, really
the usual post-enlightenment left way: facts, experiment, burden of proof on the accuser, confrontation between accused and accuser, all that other good stuff the internet hates
its almost as if the whole "punch up"/"punch down" heuristic was a stupid idea and people should just punch fair.
well the reason it is underrated is because these niche communities work in such lockstep that they act as an amplifier for the opposite POV: that everything they do is right. So what you have instead of contrasting views is loud unilateralisms that can't hear each other.
not going to rain on anyone's parade because I, too, listened to them wall-to-wall the second i found out they existed but these've been on YouTube for a long time AND Albini and the band agree they're not as good as the album versions AND they're right
people who talk like that can't do what you do

I think it is because people in a position to genuinely know about them but are not part of them now ALSO know that they are among the most risky creative communities on earth to comment or report on.

The thing about the sex conspiracy is that it was full of people whose public profile was not sexy. Thats why they had to make an evil island to fuck on.
