With his threat of a $1bn lawsuit against BBC, Trumpโs assault on the media goes global
Apropos...
1) For all its challenges the BBC is the single most widely used source of news in the UK and is highly and broadly trusted across much of the political spectrum,. See e.g. Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism research here: reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/news/bbc-und... 1/3
Next in the series "A Qualitative Look at Journalistsโ Reporting & Potential Harm to Democratic Norms" at bit.ly/4ngz6S0, with the spotlight on the @poqjournal.bsky.social article by @ferreira-rr.bsky.social and @jfdaoust.bsky.social discussing when & how to report disturbing political news.

My new research project is featured in the @leverhulme.ac.uk September newsletter โ and it made the cover! Arrived at the office today to a wonderful surprise โ a copy of my dear friend @panievsky.bsky.socialโs brand-new book. A powerful and timely take on how media can be twisted to undermine public deliberation and amplify anti-democratic forces. Looking forward to learning from her brilliant work! ๐
Taken together, our findings provide a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the criteria journalists use to decide whether to publish a story, particularly when their democratic role conflicts with traditional notions of news values that underpin gatekeeping theory. /6 end.
+ Yet, the decision to publish tends to prevail even if a majority of journalists see potential harm. Private interestsโpolitical or financialโovercome the public interest.
+ Some bet on mitigating measures (e.g., additional context or corrections) and open the door for rationalisation. /5
Reasons to publish:
๐ โCompeting voicesโ
๐ Legitimacy of position (e.g. president)
๐ Accountability of an actor
๐ Fear of looking left-leaning
๐ Audience pressure
Not to publish:
๐ซ Potential harm to democracy
๐ซ Journalismโs social and democratic role
๐ซ Ethical standards (esp on hate speech) /4
First, Journalists do hold clear and consistent views on what constitutes โproblematic contentโ. Two types stand out: content that they believe 'will undermine democratic attitudes' (or authoritarian proposals) and misinformation about 'relevant issues' (e.g., COVID-19 and climate change). /3
Journalists often face a dilemma about whether to publish content that could undermine public deliberation and democratic norms. But what do they perceive as harmful, and how do they make such decisions? We ran 36 in-depth interviews with journalists in Brazilโs biggest newsrooms to find out: ๐/2

Grateful for the opportunity to present at the #ICA2025 in Denver. I explored with @jfdaoust.bsky.social the journalistsโ perceptions and editorial decisions on content potentially harmful to public opinion. Thank you to everyone who attended the session and contributed to the discussion.
You are also warmly invited to my presentation tomorrow, Friday 13 June: โBreaking the News: Journalistsโ Perceptions and Decision-Making on โProblematic Contentโ and Public Harmโ (with Jean-Franรงois Daoust)

More morally abhorrent and politically counterproductive speech from Starmer.
1. It propagates a nativist narrative by blaming immigration/immigrants for the UKโs economic and social ills.
2. It thereby also whitewashes Tories for years of destructive economic and social policies.
