3: Even tho I don’t believe in Santa Claus, that doesn’t mean Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” isn’t still a bop. 😊 So I’m doing to Xmas songs what Xtians often do to secular songs: I’m applying my own meanings. There’s more than one reason for the season.
2: even though I know longer believe Jesus to be the son of God, the ideal of what he represented is still valuable to me. It still drives my values and pursuit for justice. So I can lean into that meaning.
Since realizing I’m now an agnostic atheist, Christmas has been hard. Especially when my favorite songs were the hymns and “religious” carols (e.g. O Holy Night, Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, etc.) But I had an epiphany this week. I can still enjoy those songs. Here’s why. 🧵
Few things are more frustrating than people in privileged groups dictating to those in marginalized and oppressed groups, the “proper” way to respond to their oppression. (especially if that privileged group is a key participant in said oppression.)
This year marks the 25th anniversary of The West Wing. I’ve been rewatching it. Why can’t President Bartlett be my President? 😩😊 He’s a leader that wants smart people around him who challenge him and often disagree. That’s the sign of a real leader. Is that so much to ask for in a POTUS?
I know and agree. But eventually, the claws of injustice will dismantle whatever justice was had, and the cycle will restart.
With all due respect to the good Dr. King, the moral universe definitely is NOT an arc.
