Winner of the Wingate Prize 2026 - The Gates of Gaza by Amir Tibon

We were thrilled with our shortlist this year, but in the end one book was our unanimous choice. Amir Tibon's The Gates of Gaza is a remarkable accomplishment. To write about the devastating events in Israel and Palestine with such humanity, such knowledge of history and such balance would be extraordinary under any circumstances; given the author's situation  — he was himself caught up in the attack of October 7 — it is even more stunning. Tibon's style is lucid and compelling, and one could not hope for a better guide to these challenging and painful times.’

Hi Adrian, Might you be interested in seeing a review copy of Chronic by Gillian Best? It takes CAR-T therapy as a starting point to investigate chronic pain. It's being published by Icon in March. Drop me a line at anna at ampliterary.co.uk if you'd like more info.

I read somewhere that the biggest fear a writer has is a blank page. I'm surprised that with their supposed fertile imaginations they couldn't come up with something more scary than a bit of paper. What about being attacked by a polar bear or perhaps galling down a really deep well full of giant, man-eating frogs? I'm no Jeffrey Archer but even I could come up with that one. Georg Rucksack, Poole

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.
