One thing that I've learned in movement is that white people who come newly into movement spaces tend to want people (Black people, Indigenous people, whoever is "centered" in that space) to tell them what to do. I don't know if it's an inevitable stage, but it is at least a very common one.

Disappointed & shocked to hear the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP) has been discontinued by the 6 Woods Hole research institutions. This is one of the longest running REU type programs offering research experiences for underrepresented students. Simply unbelievable.

Trying to do any Indigenous resistance or visibility work out here feels like centering myself, which I never want to do. I don’t have the lived native experience to be at the front of any organization, and I don’t want to take away opportunities from Indigenous kin that deserve them.
I could relocate somewhere that would allow me to get boots on the ground to protect ancestral lands that will now inevitably be targeted for resource extraction following mass deconstruction of National Parks management. Yosemite needs our protection.
Honestly considering not renewing my lease in May. Being on this island makes me feel so disconnected from the rest of the “country” because it feels like a utopia where people only care about what issues reach us on island.

I love that here in the San Juan Islands there is such a passion for conservation, but it feels like there is a great lack of indigenous voices and community. Indigenous peoples should be the backbone and at the front of conservation efforts but to me we seem invisible or ignored.
