Labor’s new environment laws won’t be ‘credible’ unless new projects consider climate change, advocates warn Environment minister Murray Watt says the government’s thumping federal election win created a ‘very clear mandate’ to establish the EPA 2.0 and fix the nature laws

“The latest attempt to rewrite fed environmental protection laws won’t be “credible” unless it forces decision-makers to consider climate change when assessing projects
“It’s the biggest impact on the Australian environment.”

Of the 16 HoR seats won by the Liberal Party so far, only 3 have female MPs

That’s 19%

Putting it another way, 66.6% of female Liberal MPs in 2025 are called Melissa, which might be a sign that more women need to be preselected for safe seats

Budget must spend political capital on economic reform The challenge to the major parties is there. Both of them could work with independents to guide meaningful reforms through parliament.

@allegraspender.bsky.social

“Both the budget and budget reply need to set an agenda towards a better future. An agenda to increase the competitiveness of our businesses, set stronger guardrails for government spending and outline an ambition to reform our tax system.”

Teals set to seize balance of power in sink-or-swim election Against a backdrop of Trump-driven global chaos, a group of mostly female MPs will decide which major party forms a minority government at the coming election.

Somewhere along the way, political parties shifted from doing what’s best for communities and this country to maintaining power at all costs.

Now, when “faced with a choice between Labor and the Coalition, roughly one-third of voters say neither”.

A group of volunteers, including members of Team Ellie Smith, gather outdoors for a community clean-up event. Some wear maroon “Ellie Smith” shirts, while others wear work shirts and hats for sun protection. They stand together smiling in front of collected debris, bags of rubbish, and a sign for Koala & Wildlife Rescue. The background features trees, power lines, and a partly cloudy sky. A young child sits on a volunteer’s lap, holding a water bottle.

It was disappointing to read the news that the Member for Dickson left to fly LNP fundraising event in Sydney last night.

We need leaders who stick by us here in Dickson.

Pork barrelling instead of evidence based policy….

The Coalition has not heeded messages sent in 2022 about integrity or doing politics better.

When public trust is so low, there is a clear case for amending the NACC Act….Australians were promised a new era of transparency and accountability. That work is not done…The first step is removing the overreach of the exceptional circumstances test.

Think the major parties have turned their backs on democracy? Here’s proof Australians have a healthy distrust of politicians. Now the major party duopoly has abandoned accountability and integrity with new laws that cement their dominance.

Anthony Whealy KC:

Backroom deal btw Labor-Coalition a deliberate and contrived assault on the integrity of our democratic system.

May be unconstitutional.

Passing this bill without adequate debate, parliamentary or committee scrutiny “an affront to our proper democratic process.”

We've known from the start this would be a major party stitch up to lock out new community-backed independents.

Giving more taxpayer $$ to pollies with no truth in political advertising protections is particularly shameful👎

As their primary vote continues to fall & Australians wake up to the fact that all the issues we face are due to decades of putting their needs above ours - expect the major parties to increasingly circle the wagons to entrench their power - as we've seen today with electoral reform #auspol

Mr Dutton & Coalition don't value the work done by public servants in CBR & around 🇦🇺

Cutting 36k public servants would be bad for veterans, aged care recipients, ppl on NDIS & everyone else benefiting from valuable govt services.

Outsourcing the public service is not cheaper.

Labor shelves contentious environmental reform after backlash from WA Labor will not try to negotiate the passage of the new laws, which would create a new federal environment protection agency, in the coming sitting fortnight.

Nature is in crisis & one of the reasons is because we don’t have a tough cop on the beat to enforce our environmental laws.

That’s why it’s so disappointing Labor is ditching plans to establish an independent EPA.

There is support for this across parliament. Let’s get it done.
