The luddites were cool as hell and I’m proud to be compared to them. Also, they didn’t hate technology; they objected to their bosses replacing their stable skilled jobs with new tech that produced an inferior product for cheaper, which certainly sounds like a familiar tune to me

I have often thought there should be way more pee tests for those in power.

My aunt was in an iron lung for a year. Her little daughter didn’t recognize her when she got out.

Tangent: Wilder's out of copyright in Canada, which is why all the books are on Faded Page (and there are probably pirated editions derived therefrom, but I have not checked).

When I was in college, every year the English department planned a picnic for Shakespeare's (approximate) birthday, and every year it snowed that day.

It used to be true that lesser cuts and organ meats were cheap. (I ate a lot of beef heart stew on noodles as a kid.) It's very far from true now.

Whitetail lights?

Yeah, I know people who've been directly billed by FedEx and other carriers for those tariffs. MAAAAYBE those people who actually paid a bill (or a bill with a line item) saying TARIFF on it could IN THEORY get some money back someday? But if you just paid a higher price, pffft, never happening.

The alcohol industry would be tits-up if non-voters couldn’t drink.

Lakeside School in Seattle (private prep) started doing this a while back. They also have a sort of walled-garden private AI system that they swear uses their own (renewable) power, etc.

Ironically, that sounds like exactly the sort of busywork a computer could do for you. But an LLM would probably fake the comparison work.

How many times, in how many contexts, in how many ways am I going to have to say that this is what "AI" does— what it fundamentally *is*— before it sinks in? That all Bullshit engines do is statistically correlate training data & inputs via their weights to produce outputs you are likely to accept…

Tangent (as it were): they sell special hip curve rulers. I got one from a free pile because it was cool and of course have yet to use it. It lives magneted to my fridge.

Boson 8-pack on Amazon (spit) is $19 something right now. So about $2.50 per, plus tax and shipping.

Beatrix Potter and her brother Bertram (I am not making this up) used to do this kind of thing. IIRC they boiled a fox and articulated its bones.

And some of it (I am agreeing with you, not contradicting anything you said) was white male privilege, as well. Lots of people over centuries worked to build and maintain the system favoring white men. No "luck" or "chance" about that at all (apart from it being chance to be born white/male).
