If you had to pick one standing committee to sacrifice, then general government is probably the one to go with. But I think she had enough councillors around to not have control here. She could have put RCL (instead of on IEC) or Shan (instead of ECDC) or both. Dropped the ball imo.

I think Bradford has a good chance of scaring off Ford but I think this points to a general feature of this election, he can't scare off everyone given how many people out there are saying they won't work with Bradford, and the vote splitting dooms him.

I would say Chow's (or maybe Malik's?) management of committee membership has been a weak point. Didn't fully expect this from her as she was a councillor (albeit a long time ago) but is hopefully something that would improve in a second term.

The general government committee is where Chow charged Paul Ainslie with babysitting a bunch of councillors she doesn't trust. Hopefully the issue rises to the attention of full council to overturn the committee's decision.

In 2024, you helped us legalize 60-unit apartments on Major Streets and remove angular plane requirements up to 6 storeys. Last year was the first major update to the Avenues policies in the Official Plan in more than 20 years. This week is the next step in making mid-rises more feasible in Toronto.

I am replacing the nearly 40 year old electric furnace and air conditioner (which I call the little engine that could) in my townhouse this spring with a heat pump. Any suggestions on brand, installer, process?

I still don't understand their strategy at a high level. Pure right wing culture war in Toronto (i.e. to the right of the conservatives who just got 25% a year ago) seems destined to fail. Municipal conservatives have always preferred low taxes/culturally ingrained suburbanism for a reason.

I don't understand why Google is telling me which sites I visit often now. I know which sites I visit often. This provides no useful information to me.

The thousands of exceptions to the zoning by-law and all the site and area specific policies mean that changes to the larger zones just introduce conflicts that would take massive amounts of staff time to unravel. Better to start over and remove SASPs as a mechanism.

Gotta go with 11. Then you get a nice January treat of no payment.

Did your place somehow get the valuation updated? That's like double median monthly property tax.

Blair doesn't go this far but I will: the post-amalgamation zoning code was designed to allow what currently exists an no more. Our attempts at necessary reform have broadly broken the zoning code and the institutions around it (like the CoA). It's time for an overhaul.

My preferred frame is the TTC is running them slower. There's not like traffic slowing them more and more over time (see e.g. the 510/509/512 getting slower) too.

Just almost everything slowing down over time and decreasing ridership.

Eliminating side setbacks in (at least) the R zone and for the Major Streets buildings are key next steps for low rise building reform in Toronto.

If you’re pushing housing in lowrise n’hoods, eliminating useless sideyards is the unlock for the urban design everybody says they want.
In exchange for sideyards that no one uses, you get better units, lush interior courtyards, space for trees and play, higher density and lower energy use.

One and a half million people are killed by animals every year. Almost one million by other animals, and more than half a million from direct conflict among ourselves.

Almost all of these deaths from other animals are caused by just two types: mosquitoes and snakes.

This might seems cute and effective, but remember that North American traffic engineers prohibit some movements from or into lateral streets only when they are under heavy stress.

It's weird to read 19th century Toronto political history, when the city was much smaller, and think about the scales. McKenzie fighting the Family Compact in a town of 10,000. Think of how small municipal world feels now, and shrink it by a factor of 300.

On the one hand, the agenda for the first Exec Committee meeting in 3 months appears to be driven by a need to make a pre-election show of "doing something." On the other hand, if we didn't have cynical pre-election agendas, maybe we would never get anything done?
