Happy New Year Ellen! I can't lie, being in Costa Rica + caring for baby sloths is awesome. At home, repairs to the house have stopped for now. My poor handyman had a run in with a stallion and took a kick to the face. Fortunately, he's alive & recovering albeit with plates, screws and a wired jaw.

Frodo arrived at the release site a few days before I did and was so tiny. His likelihood of surviving was equally small but he was a dear little guy. Rescue/rehab is a tough business, being nurturing enough but not so much that the animal can't be released.

This lizard can run on water through a combination of speed, a light body, specially adapted feet. Its long toes have fringes that expand creating a large surface area, so when the lizard runs, and slaps the water forcefully with its hind legs, it creates air pockets that prevent it from sinking.

Today my pig buddy is leaving for HQ. Tomorrow she goes to a sanctuary. A hunter spared her so she ended up here, but we rehab them and release animals and she's tame. I've made her pen a mini jungle, bringing daily bowls of vines, grasses, seeds, nuts. We bonded. I'll miss her.

Suddenly, many of the wild female howler monkeys have babies on board. And one of the babies about this size hangs out a lot with the troop leader, who is male.

I was 50 when the Affordable Care Act was passed, prior I had a pre-existing condition going back to age 9, that no insurance would cover. Catastrophic insurance was ~$1.5K/mo.

I also lived in NYC when AIDS was decimating the City. Health Insurance premiums were doubling every few months.

December Move

Mid-December I head to HQ. While in CA, I agreed to split my time between the release site and HQ where I'll work with baby animals. Initially, disappointed, but HQ's location allows more freedom to travel around. I will miss the abundant wildlife here. I will not miss the mosquitos

Escapees
Yesterday, the unexpected arrival of inspectors at 8am augmented a crazy morning. We'd already discovered a mouse cage breach, that our deep freeze thawed and the contents rotted, that municipal water was turned off following days of heavy rainfall, and we were knee-deep in animal dishes.

I wish. One 22 year old, runs to HR all of the time complaining that I'm taking a 'tone' with her. Funny, I made it through nearly 50 years without HR being involved in my life, from new employee to management level, so this is interesting. There are other options around if I need to switch.
