EMI assessment is where debates about academic literacy and English proficiency always seem to end up. I argue that relying on proficiency scores to judge EMI readiness misses the academic literacies students actually need, and risks being exclusionary. Would love your thoughts!

I’ve so enjoyed being back in Japan since mid-April, but alas, my time is coming to an end and I return to London on Saturday. I’m always grateful that I can spend time here. Huge thanks to Waseda University’s Institute for Advanced Studies who hosted me!
Photos from the Future of English project on Online Behaviour in EMI last week at Waseda University. I miss everyone! Sad our 3-year project is coming to an end…

I’m getting there! Changing planes in Houston! #AAAL2025 better late than never…
For those who missed it, Heathrow was closed yesterday and all flights cancelled due to a fire and power outage. I couldn’t get the direct flight today so I’m on my way to Houston to connect, but at least I’ll get there eventually. I’m so sorry for all my colleagues who had to cancel.
Well, I’ll get to Denver for #AAAL2025 32 hours later than planned but I’m on my way! So disappointed to miss our Global Englishes and TESOL colloquium at 8am on day one but at least I’ll be there for day two!
For those at #AAAL2025 consider starting day one off with us! Global Englishes and TESOL 2-hour colloquium…
