If you can mentally disconnect TFA from the sequels, it is, to me, one of the best SW movies. Which is why it's such a shame Rise is a complete mess.

In the commentary track for Lost, Damon Lindelof talks about how Abrams pitched the idea of them finding a hatch in the middle of the jungle. Damon asked him what was inside, and Abrams said he didn't know. It was clever and mysterious but other writers had to put in the work and figure it out.
