I am really saddened by the level of vitriol and hatred being directed toward the trans community.

We are losing our common humanity. How hard is it to treat people with kindness and respect?

Trans people are human beings โ€” and they deserve to live in dignity like anyone else.

"I know there are many trans and non-binary people who will be feeling deeply worried today, caught in the midst of a media storm as they try to simply live their lives. To those people, I say: please know that I stand with you - today, tomorrow and always.
The Green Party continues to support a policy of self-ID to allow trans people to live full lives free from harassment in the gender they know themselves to be. The judge emphasised in his speech that trans people are still protected under the law, but it is for government to now demonstrate how this will be achieved.
I will work closely with human rights and LGBTIQA+ groups to understand the consequences of this ruling, and will not hesitate to press for changes in legislation if it is needed to protect the humanย rightsย ofย all.โ€ - Carla Denyer MP, Green Party Co-leader - MP Bristol Central

The Holocaust Story I Said I Wouldnโ€™t Write For years, my friendโ€™s father asked me to recount his childhood escape from the Nazis. Why did it take me this long?

I wrote about my friend's father, a Holocaust survivor, and how the stories you run the fastest from end up being the only ones that you were inevitably bound to write in the first place. I'm sorry for the delay. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/06/m...

For the first time in over 20 years, Israel has deployed tanks in the West Bank, after expelling 40,000 Palestinians from refugee camps.

This is a prelude to full annexation, and makes a mockery of the ceasefire agreement that Israel continues to violate. [1/3]

Two hardback copies of A Brief History of the End of the Fucking World, by Tom Phillips, sitting on top of each other. The cover shows a mushroom cloud expanding above a fiery Earth, the planet and the mushroom cloud respectively forming the "O" of "World" and very demurely hiding the "U" of "Fucking". It looks, I'm going to be honest here, absolutely banging.

Apologies that I will become insufferable for the next few months, but: my new book is now officially A REAL THING THAT EXISTS.

It's a history of the apocalypse. It's out on February 25 in the UK. Really hoping that... well, the apocalypse doesn't happen before then.

Weโ€™re very pleased to reveal the 2025 Wingate Literary Prize longlist. Comprised of seven novels and seven non-fiction titles, they cover a broad spectrum of opinions, style and content, interrogating what it means to be Jewish in multiple ways.

ICC issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant and Hamas commander International Criminal Court judges say there are โ€œreasonable groundsโ€ they bore

The ICC arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu, Yoav Gallant and Mohammed Deif make clear that to continue selling arms to Israel is to aid and abet war crimes. It is utterly indefensible.

A passage from the novel:

She remembered a term she learned in a linguistics class for the way a word stops making sense if you stare at it for too long: semantic evacuation. That was what it felt like for Jenny. The world no longer had coherence. It was just a group of modules, diffuse components that dissolved into each other before you could even understand what you were looking at. The outdoors was a painted perspective of disparate objects. The houses were just bricks + doors + knobs + windows. The cars were just body + wheels + go. The people were cogs on an airport people mover. Look at the word boat sometime. You'll never unsee the way it just falls apart in front of you. Everything was its parts; nothing was its sum.
People who don't know the term semantic evacuation sometimes call this feeling depression.

Unpaid carers provide an essential but often invisible service New research is filling the evidence gap around why people are unpaid carers, and building understanding of their essential role alongside paid care services.

First post! @jrf-uk.bsky.social I've been thinking about how paid & unpaid care intertwine, and so how any future care system will rely on unpaid care.

Very excited about new work we're funding from Emily Kenway deepening our understanding of how & why we can't design out unpaid care ๐Ÿ‘‡
