Happy birthday!!!
Happy birthday!!!
I just love that photo of Phil so much, I couldnโt help myself
Yep, the Dead commissioned Nudie Cohn to design custom suits some time in โ72 and wore them on stage a few times in โ72 and โ73. At some point Philโs ended up with someone else, but he was reunited with his suit in โ06/โ07 and had Blakesberg photograph him in his suit in โ07
Not sure how the โofโ slipped in there but the point still stands. He is eminently soignรฉ, elegant, chic, etc.
Digital illustration based on a photograph of Phil Lesh in his nudie suit, taken by Jay Blakesberg in 2007
Behold, my first Procreate illustration. An homage to the ultimate clotheshorse of
I love these. Can I add them to deadheadstylearchive.com with credit to you?
Closeup shot of two t shirts, each with colorful dancing skeletons.
@sartorialpsychic.bsky.social these were the first shirts I vended on tour - not my design. Two successive years, 1984 and 85. I always liked this rainbow print technique with a single screen and pull. In case you haven't seen these specific ones

Happy Nudie-versary to Phil โPhashion Iconโ Lesh, who wore his custom Nudie suit on stage in Chicago 53 years ago today. As far as I know, he wasnโt photographed in his suit again until 2007, shortly after it came back into his possession
Surely thereโs a descendant of Pigasus the Immortal who could secure the nomination in 2028
Percy the Persian cat is pictured laying in his striped sofa bed, gazing upwards
Taking a break from writing to remind everyone that my cat is frighteningly cute
ICE agent asked why he's taking pictures of a legal observer's car, replies: "Cuz we have a nice little database and now you're considered a domestic terrorist. So have fun with that."

Let us all have the courage displayed by the residents of Minneapolis.
Cannot wait for your presentation! Same with my coworker (she even texted me about it)
Yep, I had someone submit a bunch of Donohue shirts to the Deadhead Style Archive and asked me to keep the submissions anonymous for similar reasons
I bet you had some cool ones
So glad youโll be there! โInversions of authenticityโ was my attempt at conveying how the technically โinauthenticโ (i.e. bootleg/fan-made/lot shirts, whatever you wish to call them) tend to command higher resale value, presumably b/c theyโre considered a more โauthenticโ expression of fan identity
Photograph of the front of a bootleg Grateful Dead t-shirt from 1979. The shirt is a faded black single-stitch t-shirt featuring a hand-drawn composite image that draws from the artworks of various Grateful Dead albums from the 1970s.
Close-up of the front graphic printed on a black t-shirt. Graphic is a composite of artworks from various Grateful Dead albums. Members of the band are depicted riding cars and motorcycles along the street from the Shakedown Street album cover. On the far left is the artwork from Terrapin Station, above which are the words โLive Dead.โ Upper right corner features Phillip Garrisโ โthe fiddlerโ character from Blues for Allah. Composition is framed on the bottom by the phrase โThe Dead live in concert 1979โ written in all caps white text.
Close-up of the back graphic of a black t-shirt. Graphic features a skull with the words โGrateful Deadโ scrawled across the top in black letters. Inside the left eye socket is Gilbert Sheltonโs โinvisible pimpโ character from the Deadโs Shakedown Street album art. Inside the right eye socket is Stanley Mouseโs ice cream kid character from the Europe โ72 album art. Below the skull are the words โU.S. tour 1979โ
In preparation for this yearโs Dead Scholars Caucus, Iโve catalogued hundreds of vintage Dead t-shirts sold on eBay. This shirt from 1979 (which recently sold for $341.96) is easily one of the coolest Iโve seen
Tag on an Aritzia dress which reads: โEffortless Satin: Thjs garment is made with Effortless Satin โ drapey, lightweight Japanese satin with a glossy look and feelโ
Satin can be made out of silk, but it can also be made out of polyester โ as is the case with this 100% polyester satin dress from Aritzia, which retails for $148
I swear so many brands capitalize on consumersโ lack of material literacy by positioning satin as something luxurious. They know many consumers conflate silk and satin, however, the former is a fiber and the latter is a weave structure
luck (surviving)
And lest we forget his extensive collection of dolphin shirts
Penelope Tree photographed by Richard Avedon for Vogue, October 1967
Jean Shrimpton for Vogue, March 1969
Grace Coddington photographed by Terence Donovan for Harperโs Bazaar, 1964
Bob Weir for Barneyโs, September 1989
The 1960s had The Tree (Penelope), The Shrimp (Jean), and The Cod (Grace). But in 1989, a fresh new face burst onto the fashion scene, and they called him The Weir
Haha, I love that Jacob Gallagher wrote about this. Although I will forever maintain that Phil was the true Fashion Icon of the Grateful Dead
Bob Weir posing in a print ad for Barneyโs, September 1989. Bobby stands cross-foot while holding a lit lighter, sporting a black three-button jacket over a black mock turtleneck and black pants. Caption reads: "There's more to life than applause. (We're grateful to shed some light.)"
I find it odd and deeply unsettling that Iโve yet to see any obit mention Bob Weirโs prolific career as a fashion model
๐งถ of Bob Weir singing cowboy poets. There is a version of this song where he introduces it as from his favorite cowboy poet and you can hear the audience guessing everyone but that cowboy poet Bob Dylan. No one did this song better than Weir. youtu.be/h9MoMDuKUgM?...
Oh I hope that works out! Iโm considering going to the Cap but itโs such a trek
Educators, you can bring Bob Weir into the classroom using his profile from NYCโs Hidden Voices: Americans with Disabilities in United States History. You can download it here: www.weteachnyc.org/resources/re...
Right?!
