Very weirded out by the amount of scam emails I'm receiving trying to get me to pay for fake reviews or listings on Goodreads. The emailers give these strange summaries and hollow praise of my work as part of it. Targeting authors, with their famously deep pockets, feels desperateeeee

Graphic with the following text: "1. International students who do not generate provider income should be exempt - including Erasmus+ participants following the UKβs association."
"2. Students studying SHAPE subjects must be eligible for levyfunded maintenance grants. Restricting subject eligibility harms UK economic growth and signals that disadvantaged students βdeserveβ fewer choices."
"We urge the government to reconsider the levy, engage with the sector, and pursue a sustainable funding model to safeguard higher education and research."
We are continuing to call for the government to withdraw the International Student Levy. This levy will add more financial pressure to a system under strain, threatening the UKβs research excellence, global reputation, and economic competitiveness.

The VC has planned to cut 400 jobs, close the Southend campus, demolish the Essex Pathways (foundation year) department, and decimate other departments like language & linguistics, maths & stats and business.
She met us for an all-staff meeting on Thursday. It was... fascinating! Let's fact-check.

An unerring instinct for taking the wrong tone. Most Labour MPs are decent people who see Reform, not the Greens, as the danger to the country. This approach - where KS blames anything but his own leadership - is going to go down like a lead balloon.

A Union of Oneβs Own: Fossil Free Books and the Society of Authors
Can a group of grassroots campaigners collaborate with a 140-year-old trade union that is resistant to change?
Just got round to reading this absolutely crucial piece by @noreenmasud.bsky.social and Martin Reed in @wasafirimag.bsky.social about the work of Fossil Free Books and the attempts by the Society of Authors to stifle them

A friend of mine told me about a recently published nonfic book where the writer starts off saying they didn't know what to write on; the friend told me it made her stop reading. I just started reading an essay that did the same. Do people like this strategy? Are there versions that work? V curious

Perhaps it's a way of being completely and openly transparent: the piece I'm just reading makes it very obvious the writer has been asked to write it, they want the money, they are in search of a subject, voila here you go. Kind of perfect for my current obsession with amateur/professionals!

It's strange isn't it! But it's in two very recent things (including by someone very well-known) so it seems like a kind of method that has some purchase/gets by editors! Wondering if there's some kind of amazing version of this I'm missing or that will sell me on it
