Time for another #DigitalDeclutter, as Cal Newport outlined in #DigitalMinimalism.
I’ll be off Bluesky — and other social media — until Easter.

@benterrett.bsky.social You might like this column from Joel Snape, Ben: it chimes with your “Advice: Sit at the front” blog post from April 2007!
🙏 As @garyvee.com says, ”Doing the right thing is always the right thing”! I’m grateful to @defusedublin.bsky.social’s audience for spending five minutes listening to me be stubborn about accessibility in design.

@emcguane.bsky.social Hi, Elizabeth. I’ve added a link on my “Authors Apart“ webpage to your “Design by Definition“ book, to help spread the word.

wonderfully written and vital article from @ladymissbarton.bsky.social
Reflect upon your present blessings—of which every man has many—not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.
Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
There's a roundabout in Cork where even during the worst traffic, drivers unfailingly allow others to merge in a "zip" by local custom. Driving through it restores my faith in society, every time.
I just found out it's known as the "soundabout", and that's just wonderful.

😑 This link will give you three free months of meditation on Waking Up!
—That guy is a woman’s man.
—Should we talk to him?
—He’s no time for that.
—His music’s loud.
—Yes, and his women are warm.
—Sounds like a good life!
—No; he’s been kicked around since he was born.
—How do you know all of this?
—Well, I can tell by the way he uses his walk.
My basic point is that the current AI bubble is going to pop. So what should replace it? I make the case that smaller, more energy-efficient, and more ethically trained models should be used for "boring" tasks. Our job is to solve problems, not look cool.
Oh, it's September already. Time for the HTMHell Advent calendar Call for Papers! 🖤

I’m sorry to hear that, Cennydd.
“Audiobooks, screen readers, text-to-voice applications – anything can now be turned into robotic but perfectly intelligible audio within seconds. Admittedly, the experience of ‘reading’ in this way is different. […] But it’s still reading, of a kind.”

“[@matuzo.at] has too much respect for your intelligence to waste time trying to convince you of something you already know. You already know that #WebAccessibility is important.”

Time for a #DigitalDeclutter, as Cal Newport outlined in #DigitalMinimalism:
1. Put aside 30 days for forgoing optional technologies.
2. During this period, explore meaningful activities.
3. Resume using technologies in a way that maximises their value for you.
I’ll be off Bluesky until Easter.
@heyrocker.com I updated “Authors Apart” so that the link for your book now goes to authoringexperience.com — but please let me know if you would like me to change it back to bookshop.org/p/books/desi... .
Congratulations on launching the website for your book, Greg! Would you like me to update the link on Authors Apart, to point to your new website?
That’s a great article.

“We’ve moved from humans learning to speak computer to computers learning to understand humans and I, for one, don’t want to go backwards, […]. Let’s make the computers figure out what we want, not the other way around.”
—Luke Wroblewski
Congratulations on the launch, Greg!
I’ve updated your book’s link on Authors Apart.
That’s excellent. Thanks for sharing that, Jeffrey.
Coincidentally, it’s almost 12 years since I recommended @4syllables.bsky.social’s decision tree for text alternatives, on @alistapart.bsky.social!
@cennydd.com’s thoughts on this topic from ten years ago are interesting.
🤔 Pretty much since the inception of Approachable Open Source, I’ve asked myself and others, “should the book itself be #opensource?” We’ll get to that below. But, let’s not bury the lede.
📗 Read the book at approachableopensource.com/read/

“Given the boring magic of the original tap, it’s surprising that we frequently encounter taps today that are badly designed. Many of them are so unintuitive and complex it’s now common to see a set of A4 printed instructions next to a tap.”

Here’s a 30-day guest pass for “Waking Up”, in case you want to make meditation your New Year’s Resolution.
Cool — I’ve added that colour.
Congratulations on your Amazon Best Seller! 🙌
