A is for... Archaeology๐ช
Archaeology (broadly!) is the study of human activity through the things they left behind. By piecing together lots of different elements, archaeologists can get an impression of what life was like in the past.

A group of students wearing orange high-vis vests gathered around a table eating a buffet lunch
A blue tub with wooden handles poking out sat on grass with a muddy knee pad in front of it
A wipe-board leaning against the side of a van with a list of song titles relating to 'Africa' with a hot water urn and a mug in the foreground.
Two students wearing orange high-vis vests working on an archaeological drawing of the site. One is holding the board and drawing with a pencil whilst the other is pointing at the board.
Popped along to Wollaton Park yesterday to see what Laura from @yorkarchaeology.bsky.social and her merry band of Nottingham Uni archaeology students were upto. Somehow I managed to time my visit with the traditional 'Posh Lunch' day to celebrate the end of the dig! Hurrah! #archaeology
Here's one of our team up to their shins in mud (thank goodness for those wellies!) photographing a section using a North arrow and a 0.5m measuring rod. These two tools are used to accurately record the orientation and archaeological details of the deposits and features observed in the section.
At our Wollaton dig, weโve uncovered barbed wire, shreds of clothing, and a possible boot heel plate that may link to the 1945 camp which housed German and Italian prisoners.
Weโve also recovered artefacts dating back to the Medieval period!

We reached Roman material โ some coins, hobnails from boots, a hair pinโฆ and one mystery! ๐ง
Itโs a small spoon-shaped piece, but not quite deep enough for a spoon or ear scoop. What do you think it could be?
We're hiring Geoarchaeologists at all levels!
