This piece depicts the horse in stride, ready to move forward, surrounded by fiery red silk and laser cut bamboo veneer surround. The horse is cast paper in a mold of my own design, and painted with granulating watercolors that shift red and pale teal. I wanted the piece to look like an ancient artifact framed and displayed with pride. The piece is finished in a black faux bamboo frame with antiglare museum glass.
Frame detail showing the black faux bamboo moulding surrounding the horse artwork.
Detail of the cast paper horse from the front angle, showing the depth and detail of the sculpture.
Detail of the cast paper horse from the back angle, showing the depth and detail of the sculpture.
This piece is now available through @everydayoriginal.bsky.social! In the Lunar New Year cycle, the year of the horse focuses on action and positive change. I sincerely hope this year brings positive changes, and that this horse will bring you luck!

Oh, thank you so much! Iβm not often βproudβ of works, but I was of these two. So a little disappointing when they are rejected. Still I understand that juries will always have different tastes.

Aww thank you, I am seeing some amazing things that have been passed over. There needs to be more great art book competitions to enter!

Two of my favorite ever pieces didnβt make it into IBA. Just so disappointed that my unicorn got rejected from every competition I entered it in. Oh well!

The horse is cast paper, coated in matte medium and transparent watercolor ground, then painted in watercolor. The background is made from several layers of cut paper gilded in 24K gold and copper leaf, with a mother of pearl shell veneer behind the horseβs head. The fire at his feet is also shell veneer with a thin strip of cherry wood veneer on top. I laser cut the surrounding design from four different wood veneers layered together. The frame is wrapped in black lacquer paper and protected with museum quality uv blocking and anti-glare plexiglass with brass corners.

I have a black lacquer paper covering the edges of the piece with a subtle water wave pattern. This is a reminder to take careful and measured action as an uncontrolled fire will leave everything in ashes!

The surrounding screen represents the past two years of the Wood Snake and Wood Dragon all tangled up and being pushed aside by the Fire Horse blazing in the center.

Painted cast paper horse with 24k gold and copper background, and laser cut wood veneer surround.
This year I planned on making my annual Lunar New Year piece a simple one. This is me trying to be simple! Anyway, this piece is heading to Valkarie Gallery and will be available soon!

Thank you! I never envisioned them this way, but do really like them in a group too. They were loosely based on the Terracotta Warriorsβ horses so I suppose they could be aligned in a row!

Cast paper horses stacked in a row of various faux terracotta colors on a cutting mat.
The cast paper horses are all trimmed up and ready for the next phase. Even though Iβm only using one horse in my final piece, I really love them all stacked up like this! I will probably frame the other four in simpler frames and offer them on my Etsy at some point!

Cast paper horses in terracotta colors.
The first three paper cast horses are drying! I only need one, but Iβm wanting to try a variety of terracotta colors. I am wanting it to look antique, and the Terracotta Warriors are dark brown, so just experimenting with options!

Iβm tempted to try burning the inside edge, symbolizing the new year burning away the last two tangled years, but I havenβt decided on that yet. What do you guys think?

Black and white vector file in Adobe Illustrator for the year of the horse. The fire horse is at the center of a flame disk bordered by a snake and incomplete dragon.
While the plaster mold dries, Iβm working on the files to cut the background pieces for the horse. Itβs the year of the fire horse, so there will be lots of gold and red colors. The past two years were wood snake and dragon, so those will be cut from wood veneer.

Clay horse sculpture in relief next to a plaster mold of it.
There are a few minor undercuts that scraped and a couple of bubbles, but all in all the mold came out pretty well!
