The risk of breaching international humanitarian law is long past. Canada must use every tool at its disposal to end this genocideβand do it now.
It was needed long ago, and the refusal to put such consequences on Israelβs unlawful and cruel actions has cost countless lives. While the harm of this delay cannot be undone, Canada has a chance to change course now, and stay faithful to its demands.
Prime Minister Carneyβs joint statement with the leaders of the UK and France threatening βconcrete actionsβ over Israelβs starvation of Gaza and expanded onslaught is a welcome change of tune.
In the meantime, the Legal Centre for Palestine will continue to push Canada to adhere to its third state responsibilities under the Genocide Convention through our case against the Canadian government. Learn more here: www.lcpal.ca/landmark-case
All states and international bodies must course-correct and do their part to affirm an international law that applies to all states equally. Not doing so serves to reinforce the growing understanding that international and humanitarian law are optional, to the detriment of human rights everywhere.
β...Every time you get a state that disobeys or breaches a norm, the norm is weakened because other states see you getting away with it and they think βoh I could do that tooβ."

We are aware of increasing efforts to weaponize the law to repress support for Palestinian rights. Even where unsuccessful, lawfare can have a chilling effect on free speech. We wonβt let frivolous lawsuits stop our movementβbut we canβt do it alone.
Impactful words by Amanda Ghahremani and Alex Neve.
The shameful, unprincipled actions of The Advocates'β Society continue to cause harm across the legal profession.
"Of all the professions, lawyers should be the most ardent protectors of these rights. Itβs a shame to see some Canadian lawyers actively eroding these values."

It is high time that the government admits to these shameful violations, commit itself to fulfilling its international obligations, and stop providing material and diplomatic support for Israel.
In fact, despite explicit assurances to the contrary, recently revealed US government records showed that Canadian businesses are still supplying artillery propellants bound for Israel. Canada has simply failed to live up to its international obligations to prevent the genocide in Gaza.
Prime Minister Carneyβs claim that his government is maintaining an arms embargo on Israel is not true. Canada continues to funnel weapons to Israel through the United States.
TAS has not yet committed to restoring Mr. Hadhadβs speech. To continue denying Mr. Hadhad the opportunity to speak compounds the damage and mistrust that TAS has caused. It also exacerbates and validates the rise in anti-Palestinian racism we see at the Centre day to day.
The Legal Centre for Palestine is proud to have contributed to the chorus of voices within the legal community who spoke up against TASβs decision. Without the principled stand of the community, TAS would not have issued this apology.
The Advocatesβ Society (TAS) has apologized for its cancellation of Syrian refugee and entrepreneur Tareq Hadhadβs speaking engagement for expressing sympathy for the victims of the genocide in Gaza.

Canadaβs selective application of its anti-terrorism laws is evident: it has not designated groups supporting the IDF as terrorist entities, despite extensively documented human rights violations. #Samidoun
On the crown dropping charges against the "Indigo 11":
Genocide Convention of 1948, to which Canada is a signatory, requires the prevention and punishment of genocide. We filed a case against the Canadian government in November to hold Canada accountable for failure to prevent genocide in Gaza.

The Canadian government's selective approach to terror listings undermines its credibility as a democracy. Fair and unbiased application of the law is needed. Read more here: bit.ly/3NUWKEo #Samidoun
