What a great, thought provoking read! I'm very fond of DA2 and this is such a fascinating insight into how it was written - Gaider and the team behind it did something quite remarkable (intentionally or otherwise) under circumstances that I for one would find maddening to work under.

I first played this game during some rough years of my life, and I love and appreciate it even now for everything that it means to me.
As the article says, not bad for a first draft.

It's forever a shame that things happened the way they did with Bioware, and I won't go into that as that's a discussion for another day, but I think this is a shining example of people who love what they do and sharing that love with the rest of us.

If THEY (the character) don't believe in what they're doing, then neither will your audience in SOME capacity. It almost never has to be something you personally align with ('death of death of the author'), but the character has to believe that what they're doing is for the best.
See? Opinionsโข๏ธ.

This was during a point when he was discussing writing divisive characters, and being able to justify their viewpoint in his own mind in order to give them justice in his writing, which is something that I relate to so heavily in character writing. It's one of my favorite things to do, in fact.

As a writer myself, I want to take so much of this and what he says on board in order to have a better chance of crafting something as lasting as this. Something else he said that resonated with me was, "I don't consider it an indictment of my writing or my character if people hate them."

All in all, I certainly have my opinions, but I look up to people like Gaider. DA2 has a special place in my heart despite the criticism it got upon release, and it's still my favourite in the series for all of the things they did right (and even some of what they did supposedly 'wrong').

calls: 'the slow death of death of the author'.
This is SUCH an important topic, especially in current times, and Gaider makes so many great points for it. Characters actions/opinions =/= author actions/opinions. Please think. Draw your own conclusions.

Gaider is such a phenomenal writer, and he truly made this game (and this series) what it is at its core. He points out many decisions that were made within DA2 that set it apart from others (the choice of what to do with Anders, who you side with at the end of the game and the

There are so many things I could go off on one about off the back of this article (and I know my husband is going to because he's just as invested in these games as I am), but, if nothing else, I strongly encourage you to read this because

DA2 is remarkable in what it was able to accomplish in such a short amount of time, both in development and gameplay, giving us a rich story and many of our favourite characters. Even so many years on, they stand the test of time, and continue to give new and old players reason to discuss them.

This was such a pleasure to read, and if you're a fan of Dragon Age, especially DA2, I highly recommend. I can't believe it's been 15 years already.
I introduced @quintelance.bsky.social to these games last year, starting with Veilguard and working our way back to DA2. It holds up to this day.

David Gaider Reflects On 15 Years Of Dragon Age 2 - A Fan-Favorite Story That Was The Team's First Draft
David Gaider talks us through a story that had to be written so quickly that his team had no time to doubt themselves.
It's here! This has been an utter joy to work on for Dragon Age 2's 15th anniversary. Huge thank you to David Gaider for taking me through how he and all of the writers managed to get this fan favourite story finished, with no time for redrafts www.thegamer.com/dragon-age-2...
