who I demonstrate to have played a central role in the formation of modernist thought. I also focus on underrepresented figures such as Muslim orphans, as well as modernist Muslim women and their religious ideas.
My book not only provides an in-depth intellectual history of Islamic modernism in north India, especially in the Punjab, but also the first social history of this kind, including the intricate and unexpected connections that existed between other modernist Muslims and the Ahmadiyya,
while channeling it into bids for community representation, and propose to be the more "modern" and "progressive" face of Islam while also promoting socially conservative values and staunch loyalty to British colonial rule.
I highlight in the book how modernist organizations were able to promote women's agency and curtail it at the same time, put forward Islam as a "universal religion" while advancing virulent sectarianism, dedicate themselves to charity and community welfare
Through an analysis of debates about gender, social welfare, politics, and nationalism among members and supporters of the AHI, I demonstrate internal tensions and contradictions that mark Islamic modernism as a system of thought.
Going beyond established scholarship that highlights figures such as Sayyid Ahmad Khan and institutions such as the Muslim college at Aligarh, I demonstrate the central importance of voluntary associations for the spread of modernist discourses into broader north Indian Muslim society.

Instead of focusing on scholarly and theological discourses, though, I analyze the ideas and activities by lay volunteers who were affiliated with one of the most popular Muslim voluntary associations of the region,the Society for the Defense of Islam (Anjuman-i Himayat-i Islam)
