I think we need some sort of assessment to be able to give feedback. It need not be graded, be we need to have a dialogue with our students.

Also not a fan of grades. Admittedly the evidence is accumulative - we need a path forward on better assessment and what we provide to the outside world.
There is (more or less) survey evidence over the years. The big caveat is that most of these surveys are not well crafted nor is the response rate good. The number of academic honor issues has risen, so taken together is enough evidence.
If students donβt see value in what we are trying to teach them, is it any surprise that they look for easier paths to βsuccess?β AI is definitely gasoline in the fire, but not the root of the problem.
For me this is a really important point. HE has been slipping for a long time - our methods of instruction (and assessment) have remained largely static while the students and their goals have not. One signal here is the ubiquity of cheating.
Have they thought about gritty?
Ouch

Yes,and it is the core human skill that AI will never touch.
As a mathematician and a Lehrer fan, this is unsurprising. Mathematicians have patienceβ¦.
Steingartenβs crust is quite good. It uses a mixture of lard and butter but tallow would work nicely.
Ok this is a well formed mathematical statement. Letβs say F is fluoride and I is one over how close the IQ score is to zero, ie low IQ is big. Heβs saying that I~c/F where c is a constant. So the higher fluoride is the farther IQ is from zero.
Favorite post of the year!
I like to watch for two things. One, morrow on high ground. And two, math things that would take someone a year or two done in five minutes.
Just finished @emilystjams.bsky.socialβs new book βWoodworkingβ and can thoroughly recommend it! The writing is rich and engaging and her characters are as complex, flawed, and wonderful as every human is.
I both agree and respectfully disagree. Iβll talk only about my own field - mathematics. We have completely disregarded the translational aspect of our work to the point where a centuries old subject like calculus is non comprehensible and deemed beyond reach.
Thatβs awesome- love them dachsies!

We are just leaving over one week into Trumpβs second term. So many things! But hereβs something important - he released all of the people that tried to change the outcome on Jan 6 and pushed forward an entirely unqualified sec of defense.

Iβm wondering how exactly we are βfive years past Covid.β (Add the two carry the one) wait wasnβt that 2020?
