Scientific Shot of a Peacock mantis shrimp eyes which are the most advanced in the animal world. Photo by Daniel Sasse.
the mantis shrimp has 16 types of color receptors.
humans have 3.
we see roughly 10 million colors and think that's impressive.
the mantis shrimp is sitting there processing a visual reality so hyperchromatic that scientists genuinely aren't sure what it's like to be one.

A photo of a Vancouver Island marmot sitting on a rock. The animal is chocolate brown in color with a pale snout and pale markings on its chest.
The Vancouver Island marmot is one of North Americaβs rarest mammals. By the early 2000s, fewer than 30 individuals remained. Since then, conservation efforts have bolstered its numbers to more than 400βhowever, it remains critically endangered.

Elephant Valley opens today at the #SanDiego Safari Park!
The new space is designed to replicate an African savanna with grasses, trees, and plants elephants would encounter in the wild. It includes mud baths, watering holes, & enrichment features that stimulate elephant behavior and intelligence.
A photo of a spectacled bear approaching the viewer. The animal is stocky with black fur. Its face is marked with gold, the pattern of which somewhat resembles a pair of spectacles.
Meet the spectacled bear! Also known as the Andean bear, itβs distinguished by the glasses-shaped marking on its face. An inhabitant of the tropical Andes, itβs currently the only extant bear species in South America.

The month of March roars in with a lion at Zoo Boise!
On an open African savanna, a lionβs roar can be heard up to 5 miles away. While it doesn't carry as far in busy downtown Boise, Revan's morning roars are always a highlight.
