But the upside of spontaneously deciding a character has a secret when you introduce him, is that at some point you get to decide what it is. :-)
The power of curriculum. Changing perceptions of the past through beautiful story telling based on rigorous historical research

Last year these gentlemen from Curia Vitkov (a reconstruction of an early medieval noble residence in the Czech republic) decided to go for a little winter walk.
Yes, of course the medieval way!
if there's ONE thing I've learned from @wnsdpod.bsky.social it's that every time you see some strain of "ooh medieval Europe was so wretched" handwringing you can blame VICTORIAN ENGLAND.
Today I found out I needed to hear 'Everybody wants to rule the world' in Classical Latin.

Wow, great resource! I am interested in researching how different factors influence the development of settlements with a focus on the medieval period. Water and how humans have manipulated its flow is obviously a major factor. Do you know of any examples of this?
I made the mistake of trying to watch The Northman yesterday. Made me sad and angry.
So what did Vikings really look like?
TV/movies tell us they looked like dollar-store biker gangs, wearing black leather, covered in dirt and allergic to colours... but in reality... they looked like 1970s pop singers.
Seriously, thread time.π§΅

Just a little antidote, here's a nice video of the reconstructed rooms at Dover Castle that have LOTS OF COLOUR.
Damn you Hollywood, damn you.

The evil mean folks at History Hit have been torturing our poor pal @goingmedieval.bsky.social by showing her medieval themed images created by AI... may the gods have mercy on us all.

I think I know where I am going to be spending my birthday next year :-)
I have just been accepted as a trustee of the Hampshire History Trust. I am excited to see where this opportunity may lead!
Massive away win for the little fella.
This is a longshot. Does anyone know any good sources to investigate the impact of the investiture contest in the 11th and 12th century on the ordinary person? Did they think there was a problem that need to be fixed in the first place? Did they care who fixed it? Did they like the outcome?

St Wilgerfortis, the bearded female saint, crucified on a cross in the diocesan museum of Graz, Austria
In honour of today being Trans Day of Remembrance I thought I would highlight one of the most interesting people I have come across from medieval history, St Wilgerfortis. Her cult grew after their death, speaking to unhappy wives and the non-binary all across Europe. doi.org/10.1093/hwj/...
And learn about the normality of their existence throughout history. I find the statues of St Wilgefortis particularly moving and striking.
That is how I feel all the time :-)
