As a freshly minted Ph.D. and director of scienceβequity programs, Iβve seen firsthand how proposed FY2026 cuts to NSF, NIH, and NASA arenβt just future threatsβtheyβre halting vital climate resilience, community health, and STEMβeducation projects NOW

they are beyond out-of-touch...
I continue to find it fascinating that during times of crisis 1) people seem to think comms/scicomm will be able to overcome enormous systemic and political problems and 2) how everything we know about the deficit model flies out the window.
I passed. Officially Dr. Ulrich :)
Exciting news is that, after a long Ph.D., my defense is scheduled for March 20th at 1:15 PM PT.
Some of you have been along with me since the beginning! If you'd like to Zoom into my defense, please let me know!

BREAKING: We are suing HHS for the removal of critical health info and data from websites.
The removal creates a dangerous gap in scientific research and threatens public health.
The Trump executive order that led to this purge puts American lives in danger.
Bro, if you aren't going to hire me, AT LEAST SEND ME A REJECTION.
Many scientists were impacted during the first term. They were immigrants. They were Black. They were Muslims. They were queer,...
Science is, and has always been, political. Maybe now all scientists agree.

New work: we created a new transfer function for calculating air temp from lake surface temps using data from ~1,400 lakes via regression-based inverse modeling.
This should enable more accurate paleotemperature reconstructions from lake proxy data.

I am a biologist. This policy is based on disinformation and is also extremely harmful to many of our community members.
Here is your biological truth: there is no single and universal set of criteria that delineates or defines "distinct" sexes. We are a beautifully variable species!
Hi, everyone. 1) Yes, I'm ok. We evacuated on Wednesday after the Sunset fire broke out. 2) Yes, I'm frustrated with the lack of (and active dismantlement of) public infrastructure when emergencies arise, ESPECIALLY when they are due to winds that blow through every year.
However, that's not primarily what matters here! The main issue is the overlap between "critically dry vegetation season" and "strong dry wind season." Due to decreases in autumn precipitation, increases in overall evaporative demand, that overlap is expected to increase. www.nature.com/artic...
