And, yes, the lens is from Napolean III, the nephew of Bonaparte, the first president and second emperor of France. He gifted the lens to Notre Dame around 1866.

I went down a rabbit hole of the history of astronomy at the University of Notre Dame and found this gem in the 1873-74 annual catalog.
ββ¦rendered practically interesting.β
In essence what they're saying is losses matter. Well, if that's the case, how about 3-loss Alabama? They got crushed by Georgia and lost to a not great FSU. (And Oklahomaβ¦) NDβs losses were by a total of 4 points to top 10 teams.
Your wife is smart.
Recorded during 2024, this year-spanning series of images reveals a pattern in the seasonal drift of the Sun's daily motion through planet Earth's sky. Known to some as an analemma, the figure-eight curve was captured in exposures taken only at 1pm local time on clear days from Kayseri, Turkiye. Of course the Sun's position on the 2024 solstice dates was at the top and bottom of the curve. They correspond to the astronomical beginning of summer and winter in the north. The points along the curve half-way between the solstices, but not the figure-eight curve crossing point, mark the 2024 equinoxes and the start of spring and fall. Regional peaks and dormant volcano Mount Erciyes lie along the southern horizon in the 2024 timelapse skyscape.

They did not move back finals. Period. In fact, they moved them up a day (and had some on Saturday) to make sure no one had an exam today.
There's so much stuff on our social media timelines that we scroll past quickly, maybe with a "oh cool" and then moving on, but if you stop and think about what you are seeing here, it's really amazing.
You're watching a high-resolution panorama view from *another* *world*.

The UNC Athletic Department runs a $17M deficit this year, so they up the coachβs salary from $5M to $10M?
I don't know, maybe for-profit health insurance isn't the best way to care for humanity?

Love a good infographic
Whoa. Iβm just learning that βIstanbul (not Constantinople)β was not originally a They Might Be Giants song??
Thereβs a parallel here to the astronomy literature I suspect: when old folks like me think βno one remembers anything from before 2000β¦β
But it would have been very cool to see!
To be fair, βin actionβ may have been quite tedious!
You know, when you think about it, the blame for Donald Trumpβs continued presence on the political scene can be traced to one clear moment. Thatβs right, Iβm talking about when the Democrats wouldnβt let Mitt Romney (a Truly Decent Manβ’οΈ) become president in 2012.
β¦and Iβm here for it!
Whoops! π
Ooh. I like this. But for maximum chaos, letβs make the time zones in 20 minute intervals!
Wow. Thatβs so amazing. Both the science and your luck, of course, but also your willingness to share. Thanks for that. I feel educated and enriched just having read it.
I mean, they clearly had a prejudice against allowing him to do whatever the hell he wanted.
Thatβs how they treat the masses, but as a billionaire, he shouldnβt just take that kind of crap.
Iβm so glad @effinbirds.com is here flying the blue skies!
