In a time of increased and record breaking ridership, the deputy secretary of the FRA thinks that restructuring Amtrak is a good idea. Fully funding Amtrak is a good idea, adding routes, adding new rolling stock, also good ideas.

The plus isn't just reduced pollution, electrification decreased travel time. Investment in electrification infrastructure could also be a boon for the economy in multiple ways. Jobs, less in medical bills, fewer sick days, both mean more money in consumer pockets to spend on local economies.
Building tunnels, laying more track, building new engines- all would be a welcome change in USA, rather than money spent on the MIC.

FRA is directing Amtrak to restructure. Rail Passengers Association posted this statement
I have not seen a major rail merger face this breadth and depth of organized opposition this early in the process. That doesn’t mean the deal is dead. But it does mean the road ahead is more complicated than UP’s CEO suggested when he said he was “99.999% sure” of approval.
