A large stuffed seal, made out of black and white flannel (formerly, a button-down shirt) sits on top of a pile of blankets. He's got a soft black oval nose and two shiny black button eyes.

A small colour-pencil sketch of a friendly-looking golem, a creature from Jewish folklore made out of rocks and mud, carrying two blue grocery bags (one in each lumpy hand). Above the drawing, a caption in blue ink reads "community safety can mean a lot of things..."
Grocery Golem says: 'Food justice is part of how we take care of our community!'
(I've just been enamored with this concept since it popped into my head the other week)
A lemon-meringue pie, fresh out of the oven, photographed from above.
New Year's resolution for 2026 ... bake more lemon-meringue pies?
Here's to a sweet year ahead ๐ ๐ฅง
A black dog with white-tipped paws lays her nose just across the threshold of the kitchen, giving the absolute definition of 'puppydog eyes,' as she waits to be fed.
Poor, *poor* puppy ... nothing good has ever happened ... not ever in your life ...
(Or: It's 30 minutes till dinnertime, and she KNOWS IT ๐
)
Three stylised bird-like creatures in tones of green, yellow, and blue. Colour pencil sketch. They kind of look like calla lillies, and kind of look like funky little birds.
Lily Pals!
(Or, I was trying to sketch some calla lillies, and it turns out they kind of look like birds)

Well, this was a great read!
Sometimes, the work really does pay off ... even if it takes a while to get there ๐ฆ

A digital illustration of a medieval banner. It says in medieval inspired script "ye olde trans rights". It is decorated with plants and blue, pink, and white flowers.

A loaf of foccacia, fresh out of the oven, photographed from above. The bread is lightly golden-brown with lots of indentations, and has been sprinkled with coarse salt and rosemary sprigs.
Bread-y or not ... it's winter baking time!
A pencil drawing of red roses surrounded by green leaves, all outlined in black ink.

A watercolor painting of white berries around a cluster of leaves changing colour for the season - greens fading to brown, orange, red, burgundy.
A photograph of white berries among leaves leaves changing colour for the season - greens fading to brown, orange, red, burgundy. It is not a perfect match for the painting (inspiration, not quite re-creation), but they have many visual/compositional elements in common.
It's AUTUMN!!

Swirls of green aurora borealis light up the night sky over Martensville, Saskatchewan on October 9, 2025.
What a lightshow!
Julia, a young white person with short hair and a button-spangled jean jacket, brandishes a pie-server above their head while grinning with absolute unfettered glee.
No, YOU'RE way too excited about coming 5th in the local pie contest (and winning a really nice pie server)!
Oh, that is adorable! What a joyful little bug ๐
A sketchbook page with black-and-white pencil drawings of flowers and leaves. One of the drawings is a very rough sketch; the other is shaded and has more detail.

A pug sits happily atop a small remote-controlled fire truck being driven down the street in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Pug in a truck!
This is truly stunning! It just makes me smile โ๏ธ๐ซ๐
A photo of four industrial-looking cylinder things (I don't know exactly what they are, sorry - they are grey and tall and probably concrete and lined up in a row) covered in graffiti in the middle of a field under a blue, blue summer sky.
A colour pencil drawing of the previous photo of four industrial-looking cylinder things covered in graffiti.
Sometimes, my friends see some very cool things on their adventures! And take pictures! And then I get to draw them!

Thirteen painted dragonflies with black ink details. The bodies of the dragons are painted in warm colours, and the wings are painted in cool colours. The dragonfly in the middle is done in black-and-white only.

Two pieces of graffiti written on a white-painted wall. The first, in large black lettering, reads "I'm so glad you exist!" The second, in different handwriting immediately below the first, reads "And I'm so equally glad you gave us this great grafito!"
Some true Chaotic Good vibes spotted in Vancouver, B.C. this week (including a great use of the singular 'grafito!')
Three buckets half-full of fresh-picked berries: Bright red raspberries in one, handfuls of sweet blue haskaps in another, and a whole lot of shiny blackcurrants in the third.
Calendar says it's three weeks past the end of berry-picking season ... but the blackcurrants and haskaps (and even a few delightfully stubborn raspberries) disagree!
A vase of fresh cut flowers photographed outdoors on a summer afternoon: Bright green leaves, sprigs of red amaranth, zinnias in orange, white, yellow and pink. In the top left corner of the frame, the long nose and a single paw of a large black dog is visible, as she absolutely photobombs the picture.
Well, I was TRYING to take a reference photo for drawing ... I can't tell if this means that my favourite four-legged art critic approves of the composition, or thinks it needs a more dynamic element!
Once again, it is my favourite time of the year in Saskatoon - Fringe season!
Here are my reviews of all 23 shows: thestarphoenix.com/news/local-n...
(The festival runs until August 9, and there is SO MUCH good stuff on the stage. #yxe, don't miss it!)
Only realized slightly too late after I started drawing that I didn't actually have any pink coloured pencils ... oh well!

Julia is in the middle of working on their 'Art Battle' painting, a birch tree with a tire swing hanging off of one branch the entire painting is in black and white except for the middle of the tire swing, which is full of leaves and flowers.
Well, chalk that up as a brand-new life experience - timed, competitive 20-minute painting in front of an audience!
Joining the YXE Urban Games art battles was *spectacularly* fun ... can't wait to try something like this again in the future ๐จ ๐๏ธ ๐
A coloured pencil drawing of a red rose, done in the margins of an agenda. It's recognisably rose-like, but amateurishly laid out. It looks like (and very much is) the work of somebody just learning how to sketch and draw.
A coloured pencil drawing of a red rose with green leaves, done in the margins of an agenda. Compared to the previous drawing, it has much more detail; the shape is less stylised and more realistic, there are more light and shadow details, more blues and yellows among the reds to give shape and depth to the blossoming petals.
Three months ago, I started drawing for fun every day ... and I can't wait to see what I'll be able to do three months from now!
How it started: How it's going:
An astonishingly perfect pink flower surrounded by vibrant green leaves and a bring yellow centre.
Thank you! I've been learning to paint this year, and it's been really fun!
A watercolour painting of a stylised forest scene. Leafy green trees, with a few copses of red and yellow, take up most of the page. Weaving between them, the blank white trunks of three birch trees rise up from the bottom of the painting to the very top.
Boreal Forest.

Julia, age 9-ish, wears the pinkest, sparkliest, most shimmery princess dress you ever did see while grinning under the stage lights.
Me now, to me at age nine:
Guess what, kid? In 20 years, you'll have way shorter hair and fewer dresses, but you'll never stop getting that great big grin every time you sing, and that's the important thing.
(And also, you'll have so much more to smile about than you ever could have dreamed ๐)
