Recommendation from the UK Statistics Authority on the future of population and migration statistics in England and Wales
Statistics for the Public Good
Today the UK Statistics Authority has recommended Government commissions a census of England and Wales in 2031.
Subject to Government approval, along side growing use of administrative data this will support a system of population & migration statistics which best meets the needs of users.

In July, we published 2023 mid-year population estimates. Alongside these we published more information on our admin-based population estimates (ABPEs), this represents a huge step forward in our plans to make greater use of administrative data.

Estimates of families (with and without children), people living alone and people in shared accommodation, broken down by size and type of household.
Followed closely by Families and households in the UK.
In 2023 there were 19.5 million familiesΒ in the UK, an increase of just over 1.1 million families since 2013.
