This is key, isn't it? A rainforest depends on conditions rather than specific species or management. If we encourage natural woodland in an area where rainforest would grow, then won't it tend towards rainforest-ness?

Both points understandable, but only superficially true. Agribusinesses (shareholder owned) will benefit from the removal of family farms. Most farmers (that I know) would be about even selling their farms and living off investment income, but the value can only be realised by liquidating it all...
The subsidy is needed because we all want cheap food. You can't have your milk for £1 a pint from mostly non-cruel farming practices without subsidising the farmers.

The problem as I see it is that Labour weren't voted in on a string manifesto. Their whole campaign message was "we're not the Tories", so now they have power, they have no real vision, so they're doing some good tinkering. "Not doing *that* bad may be the worst thing a government can do!
