In Oct 1671 John Evelyn says it was “universally reported” that Charles bedded Louise de Kerouialle and they had “the stocking flung” like a bride — but his isn’t exactly a filthy account (Evelyn denies seeing anything like it) 🤔

Astonished to learn that my book Contesting Earth's History is suddenly, perhaps for a brief window, almost affordable. Why? Who knows.

Great failed resolutions
Even the most successful people can have problems sticking to their new year plans...
• Samuel Pepys - To give up "wine, plays, and other expenses". Lasted a few weeks.
• Samuel Johnson - To rise "at eight or sooner" instead of staying in bed "till two". Revised to
"to rise by degrees more early in the morning".
• PG Wodehouse - To learn the banjo. Banjo was pawned by a housemate, who lost the ticket.
• Katherine Mansfield - To keep a diary for posterity. Managed two months.

'I wish it could be Christmas every... er... month?'
We all know that Parliament abolished Christmas in 1647 (boo!), but they also created a new monthly holiday (yay!), enforceable by magistrates.
The actual Christmas ban caused riots later that year, but after that was barely enforced.
