Great failed resolutions
Even the most successful people can have problems sticking to their new year plans...
• Samuel Pepys - To give up "wine, plays, and other expenses". Lasted a few weeks.
• Samuel Johnson - To rise "at eight or sooner" instead of staying in bed "till two". Revised to
"to rise by degrees more early in the morning".
• PG Wodehouse - To learn the banjo. Banjo was pawned by a housemate, who lost the ticket.
• Katherine Mansfield - To keep a diary for posterity. Managed two months.

'I wish it could be Christmas every... er... month?'

We all know that Parliament abolished Christmas in 1647 (boo!), but they also created a new monthly holiday (yay!), enforceable by magistrates.

The actual Christmas ban caused riots later that year, but after that was barely enforced.
