And when I say “Linux desktops” really I mean “chrome or Firefox running on Linux”.

My laptop is totally normal Ubuntu and day to day things hardly use even 4GB of RAM, except for web browsers. Web browsers get hungry.

Basically. Last I saw, MacOS builds were done with compiler flags that minimize memory use (e.g. choose space in space-or-time trade-offs), and it’s pretty aggressive about compressing pages that aren’t in active use.

But I worry that tricks like that can only go so far.

MacOS does a lot better with low RAM than Windows or Linux desktops, cuz of fairy magic.

Still, it’s a pittance.

I want to love the Neo but worry about how long 8GB RAM will be adequate. Because of that I’d only recommend it as a secondary machine.

I’d say go for any used or refurbished Apple Silicon Mac with 16GB or more of RAM.

Do you know that with a bit of clearancing for the rods, you can put a 4.2 crank into a 4.0 block? You get a 4.7L engine with a torque curve that is basically the question “is the engine running?” 🤩

Some folks have moved the entire powertrain from a late 1990s Jeep Cherokee into an AMC Eagle (it mostly just fits, cuz of continuity of engineering) and it’s truly a thing of beauty 🥺
