Our little wildlife pond is teaming with tiny tadpoles! A few have dispersed and are feeding around the edges, but mostly they're all clumped together so the surface of the pond looks alive.

Just two years ago a single frog laid a small clump of spawn… and now, a few years on, there's LOADS of it

March is the month everything starts to stirβ€¦πŸŒ±

Fresh shoots are pushing through the soil and early flowers are opening up. Maybe you’ve even spotted your first bumblebee out on its daily commute! 🐝

Check out these species popping up at the moment πŸ‘‡

Have you spotted any?

Here’s Mark Avery’s review of Amanda Tuke’s @amandatuke.bsky.social fabulous new book Wild Pavements. In a nutshell: if you thought there wasn’t much wildlife in town, let Amanda take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London, she’ll show you something to make you change your mind.

Your Wild Pavement book sounds great, Amanda... right up my street/pavement!

Following on from my post about my husband rescuing toads from under a grate.

So many wild creatures perish from dropping into drains & cattle grids, but I learned from @thenorfolkcoast.bsky.social that councils can install wildlife gully ladders.

Hallelujah! We have a cattle grid at the entrance to our house & it's so important to add steps or an escape ramp so that animals can escape. Our grid has brick steps leading to freedom. Such a fab story here...πŸ™Œ

That's a really good idea. He's put chicken wire under the grate till the toads stop crossing, so they won't fall through again this year, but if he's not gardening there next year (property belongs to people he works for) it will just happen again.

My husband rescued over 100 #toads this morning...

Stuck in just a few inches of water, at the bottom of a deep-sided pit with a grate on top. He'd walked over the grate a few times before he noticed movement beneath it and realised what it was. Thank goodness he was able to reach them !

Baffled by blackthorn We often learn best from our mistakes, and I thought I’d pass on a little learning from a mistake I made recently. The unseasonably warm weather brought out Spring in a rush, and I photographed thi…

Spring has sprung & buds are beginning to burst into #blossom. At least they are here in Cornwall

A good time to remind myself of the differences between Blackthorn & Cherry Plum...explained beautifully in this great blog post by @badbotanist.bsky.social 🌿

Meanwhile, down by the #weedypond the Robin is also gathering moss - what a wonderful building material this is.
Here we see that whilst a rolling stone can gather no moss,
a Robin gathering moss cannot take a drink...

Tom Cox New writing by bestselling author Tom Cox.

THREAD. Late last summer I moved my newsletter away from Substack. I was not comfortable with the site's political choices, did not want to give 10% of my income to venture capitalists & felt Substack had reneged on their commitment to long form writing. My newsletter is now here: www.tom-cox.com

I was sitting by our pond yesterday, and heard a faint repeating sound/call which I don’t recognise. Please can anyone tell me what it might be? It could of course be made by a human, but I felt it more likely to be a creature of some sort. Very faint, so volume up! Thank you πŸ™
