Private clinics must follow NHS and ban child gender drugs The Daily Telegraph10 Mar 2026By Michael Searles DEPUTY HEALTH EDITOR Wes Streeting ordered a review into gender hormone treatments last year WES STREETING has been told to ban private prescriptions of cross-sex hormones to children. The NHS said yesterday that it would stop prescribing the drugs to gender-questioning under-18s because the “available evidence does not support the continued use” of them. A group bringing legal action to secure a ban welcomed the NHS decision but said it would be an “abdication of responsibility” if the Health Secretary allowed private clinics to continue providing them. The drugs, also known as gender-affirming hormones, are now mostly obtained by children and their families from private clinics and online, often unregulated, markets. Mr Streeting announced a review of the medication last May, but no details have been published and private clinics continue to supply them. Legal action to ban cross-sex hormones for under-18s was halted last year in order to give time for this review to be undertaken. However, those behind that challenge are set to issue proceedings once again this week, it is understood, almost one year later. Cross-sex hormones include testosterone and oestrogen, which are taken to help someone change their physical appearance to align with their desired gender, such as by growing hair or breasts. They are different to puberty blockers, which suppress the hormones that support a child’s body and brain to develop into an adult.
