In our 10.30 am all-age Eucharist we will be giving thanks for the mothering love of the church and of God, as well as the love we receive from others, whoever they may be.

Mothering Sunday remains a reminder that we are shaped by communities of love, and that the Church is called to embody the generous, sheltering, life giving love of God.

Cathedrals are often referred to as Mother Churches and we want to encourage you to join us for worship on Mothering Sunday.

Its earliest meaning is tied not to family life, but to the Church as mother - the place where Christians receive their spiritual identity, formation and guidance. Traditionally servants would be given the day off work and would go back to worship in their Mother Church and to visit their family.

This coming Sunday, 15 March, is Mothering Sunday. It's a day that has deep roots in the life of the Church long before it became associated with the modern celebration of mothers and motherhood...

The worship of the Cathedral is shaped by the women who lead and sing here: choristers, Vicars Choral, Director of Music, Servers, Wardens, Canons and Bishop. On #InternationalWomensDay we celebrate all the women whose voices make St Edmundsbury a place of welcome, worship and song.

Yesterday evening we held an Evensong service to mark the receipt of the Bury Psalter. Pictured with Bishop Joanne and Dean Joe is Alan Jary, Comptroller of the King Edward VI Grammar School Foundation Trust, who gifted the Psalter to us at the Cathedral. You can see the Psalter in the Treasury.

In the second of our Lent sessions Dr Nick Spencer explored the relationship between church and science in the age of technological advancements. Rooted in a vision of human fullness being characterised by love, we considered how science might transform us more into people God created us to be.

March’s Dogs of the Cathedral Calendar model is Bobby the Collie-cross who hails from Romania and now lives with their English human. Bobby might be crossed with a Papillon which would explain his compact size & floofy tail!

Dogs are welcome, if they are well-behaved and on a lead πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί

Last night we began our Online Lent Series with The Reverend Dr Adrian Burdon. Building on his experience of working with and for Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, he gave a hopeful exploration into what 'A United Church' might look like, envisioning it as a dynamic, ever-renewing community.

Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, Lent is a time of self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study and giving as we prepare to celebrate Easter. To reflect this, worship has a more sombre tone; we don't sing the Gloria or say the word 'Alleluia' and a cross hangs above the altar.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Ashes are an ancient form of penitence, and, from the middle ages, it has been the custom for Christians to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross. Both our 1.00 pm and 7.00 pm services today include the offering of ashes.
