My point was that the profitability of these types of crossover collabs is probably more accurately traced back to Smash Bros. (and potentially even Kingdom Hearts). Fortnite just enshitified it.
I would argue that the hype surrounding every character reveal for Smash Bros. is what really exposed this as profitable and inspired Fortnite to pursue collabs with every conceivable IP under the sun.
