Pictures of M. sharonae, the oldest fossil liverwort, displaying very well-preserved dark cells forming salt-and-pepper patterns, a hallmark of lateral inhibition.

Enter the oldest known fossil liverwort, Metzgeriothallus sharonae (ca. 388 Ma). These exceptionally well-preserved fossils allow us to distinguish different cell types. Dark cells (homologs of oil body cells of modern liverworts) form salt-and-pepper patterns, a hallmark of lateral inhibition.

πŸŽ‰ Congrats to Louise FougΓ¨re, winner of the #SBCF PhD Award 2025!

Her work using Arabidopsis, in Yohann Boutté’s lab (Univ. Bordeaux / CNRS) identified a novel ER–Golgi intermediate network, advancing our understanding of Golgi maturation, with key results published in Nature Cell Biology.

Towards a unified framework for the function of endoplasmic reticulum exit sites Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, Published online: 29 September 2025; doi:10.1038/s41580-025-00899-0Endoplasmic reticulum exit sites (ERES) are specialized ER subdomains that regulate the export of secreted cargo. This Roadmap explores how ERES integrate biochemical and mechanical signals to coordinate trafficking and proposes a multidisciplinary strategy to investigate their function, including in disease.

On April 19, 1898, Camillo Golgi described what we now know as the #Golgi apparatus - a structure so pretty and unusual it took over fifty years for the scientific community to agree it wasn’t just an artefact.
April 19 is #GolgiDay! Mark your calendars to honour the best organelle.
