Panx1a modulates metabolic stress signaling and synaptic composition in the developing zebrafish brain - Cell and Tissue Research Pannexin 1a (Panx1a), a neuronal ATP-release channel, is increasingly recognized for its role in neurodevelopment, yet its contribution to synaptic homeostasis under metabolic stress remains poorly de...

Members of my team report that loss of Panx1a exacerbates mitochondrial dysfunction, disrupts ATP signaling, activates stress pathways like AMPK–mTORC1, and impairs synaptic integrity, leading to increased neuronal cell death and altered network activity #zebrafish #pannexin doi.org/10.1007/s004...

Moments like these, cooking dinner over an open fire, sitting on the shores of the amazing Fort Peck Reservoir in Montana, watching a storm roll through at sunset into a beautiful rainbow. Moments like these are why I’m so passionate about being outside and seeing the world around us. οΏΌ

Exciting new work from former PhD student Dr. Paige Whyte-Fagundes. The research performed in the internationally renown Baraban lab at UCSF addresses the need for automated detection of zebrafish seizure-associated behavior.

I count 55 emails back and forth between 8 people to make a simple computer purchase. 35 of those emails concern a $30 difference in price because of a backorder.

When people talk about inefficiencies in academia, it's because the MBAs enforce auditing as control rather than letting people work.

Two more of my favourite photos by Sebastiao Salgado illustrating the beauty and dimensions of his work. An endless stream of miners in Brazil working like ants to find gold and the endless of open country. Total loneliness. No one.

The first time I saw Sebastiao Salgado’s work was in the 90’ in London. Here I have selected a photo which condenses humanity, raw beauty, and pain in unprecedented ways. Only the greatest artists can capture such a moment. RIP.

See you at the 2025 CAN meeting in Toronto, May 21–24! The PhD trainees will present innovative research on Panx-1 and -2 in the nervous system:
πŸ“ Georg S. Zoidl – P1-B-70
πŸ“ Fatema Nakhuda – P2-B-41
πŸ“ Riya Shanbhag – P2-D-131
Looking forward to connecting with the neuroscience community!

Finally rejoined social media - for science and connection! My undergrad powered lab investigates how cells in the developing visual system transition from proliferation to differentiation using lots of microscopy. Equal parts teaching, research, and mentoring the next generation.

Really proud of Fatema Nakkuda for her talk at the 3rd Canadian Zebrafish Research Conference in Toronto. She shared her PhD work on learning and memory with clarity and care true to her thoughtful and compassionate approach to Science. Great to see her work getting the spotlight it deserves.

Anyone read this book and willing to comment? It shows up a lot in different feeds and generally falls in my areas of interest. So do a few other books. Would like to prioritize.
